I came here for the two week trial after having friends recommend BJJ to me. I have taken Karate and Judo in the past (even won in tournaments) and decided to see how different BJJ is. The facility is nice, staff is friendly. Pricing seems on point for a BJJ membership. But after a few days I realized it wasn’t for me. Now just to preface this review is for my personal experience, and many people might like BJJ for the aforementioned reasons I didn’t. This isn’t a personal judgment on any trainers as they are very experienced and are great at BJJ.There isn’t a beginner class for adults. They throw you in with experienced students who can easily beat you in one on one matches. I get why this is done to help immerse people in BJJ, but after losing EVERY match and having to crab walk a total of 12 times around the mat, it felt more like a punishment to me than a learning experience. Of course I lost, as I’d never taken a BJJ class before. And I didn’t want to come here only to crab walk. The attitude of the other students seemed like they were embarrassed I was there losing every match, and wondering why it “didn’t click” with me after 10 minutes. Well of course not, it’s my first class! Seems like more of a “crypto bro” environment (explain hard things to people expecting them to instantly get it and be 100% obsessed with it). Definitely not a causal environment and more Cobra Kai.If you want to try BJJ this studio is great. But if you’re not ready to commit 100% to it then maybe reconsider.

I have been training at South Valley Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 2 years. It is a phenomenal place to train and is one of the best things I have done for myself. They have classes Monday through Saturday with times that fit almost any schedule. Having access to the morning class at 5am has made it easy to train while not taking time away from work or family. The facility is always clean and the people are welcoming!

Our kids (5 & 7 year olds) were going here the last several months, but we had to pull them out. They initially enjoyed it, liked the kids they met there, and loved a lot of the instructors, but they started telling me the kids would get hit there. I thought they meant during the practices, but they said it wasn’t.My husband and I sat in for a portion of the next one and we saw the instructor the kids called “Nick,” the main instructor, slap my 7 year old daughter across the face and our 5 year old son across the back of the head for not giving enough “eye contact” while they were slapping hands at the end of practice. I am not anti-discipline, but to give corporal punishment, as well as for something so petty, is inexcusable and unacceptable. This guy also critiques their report cards in front of everyone and shames the kids with less than perfect grades. It gets a little uncomfortable for them and the viewers. Ultimately, holding the kids responsible should be up to the parents, not the instructor. I get that having so many kids together can be like herding kittens, but I think this can be done without slapping them.

BBJJ wouldn't accept my grandson for some reason. Came to SVJJ and was surprised by the cleanliness of the school. Grandson loves it!!!

This a friendly and safe training environment. Higher belts focus on helping everyone learn techniques without harming training partners. The vibe you want in a great gym.

I’m from AZ and came to visit family for the summer holiday. I didn’t want to miss out on any training, so I reached out in advance to see if it was okay to drop in.I was able to attend the Thurs 630pm class to train and everyone was very welcoming. I learned a lot from Coach Jess and got some good rolls in as well. If you live in the area and want to learn BJJ, I’d definitely recommend this school!
