Retriever Activities Center at UMBC offers a versatile recreational experience with a variety of facilities. The gym includes a revamped weight room, indoor track, cardio and weight equipment, and basketball courts. Students appreciate the nice smell and sociable atmosphere but suggest visiting during off-peak hours to avoid congestion.
The center is open four days a week with limited hours, and some users feel the fee structure doesn’t justify the restricted access, especially when parts of the facility are sometimes closed for other events. However, it remains a popular spot among students and the university community for both fitness and events.
Pros:
- Nice smell and sociable atmosphere.
- Variety of facilities including weight room, indoor track, and basketball courts.
- Free for students.
- Revamped weight room with good equipment.
- Indoor track available.
- Air-conditioned event spaces.
- Open on weekends for six hours.
- Best event center on campus.
- Machines mostly work without long waits.
- Staff and community members are generally helpful.
Cons:
- Gym is small and crowded during peak hours.
- Fee structure is high for limited access.
- Poor parking options during events.

It’s the universities recreational activity centre. It has a running track, badminton court, swimming pool, gym, basketball court. And many other activities carried out.

607$ per semester 1214$ per year = est 100$ a month. If I’m going to pay this much in fees for the gym then I should have proper access to the gym, during the summer if your going to close up the basketball courts for child day cares is very inconvenient. Normal gyms with monthly cost of 40$ atleast stay open until 10 with out closures of over a week. There are so many inconveniences for what we as students pay it is honestly disgusting. If the school is going to take money for a gym faculty atleast give us a proper gym it shouldn’t be treated as a privilege since it is being payed for, I would understand if we were not paying for the facility for whatever shenanigans the school did with that building but we are paying customers at the end of the day.

pretty nice facilities, completely free for students. Revamped weight room is incredibly nice, also contains an indoor track, a wide array of cardio and weight equipment, and basketball courts

This gym is sufficient for my needs. Nice smell and atmosphere. People are sociable and are willing to help you. Though there are peak hours where you will struggle to get the bench or squat rack. Go at off hours if possible.

The quality of it depends on what you're used to, the gym machines for the most part always work and there are enough that you don't need to wait. The weight room is a bit small but REC closes at 10 so if you go later or between classes you should be fine. If you just need a place to work out it does it's job but just remember it is a college gym so you get what you pay for.

Absolute garbage. This place is the poorest excuse for a gym that I have ever been to. The weight room is ridiculously small and there's barely any equipment to use. Aside from that, the entire place is less than aesthetically pleasing and feels nothing like a gym. You'd think with all the tuition people pay, the school would care more about providing the students with a more engaging experience. In short, this place needs to be destroyed... Or at least painted a different color.

Sons high school graduation was held here. Seats were a bit hard but at least it was air conditioned for the big crowd they had. I've been to a graduation with no air before and was very thankful this wasn't a repeat.

Not very accommodating for our swim meet. poor parking options. I had to park .5 miles away and pay for the joy of doing it.Then one of the event staff was rude to me when they had a basketball game in the evening and I was trying to retrieve my property that was in the gym ALL MORNING AND AFTERNOON that day.Pool has always been slow for our daughter. Viewing area is undesirable.

A decent facility for exercise, but disappointing far as campus athletic centers go. There are never enough cardio machines. There are no racquetball courts. And the varsity sports often take over the indoor track because they don't have proper training facilities.
