How going to a Muay Thai gym helped me get through the toughest parts of medical school:Medical school is one of the toughest journeys someone can take. Compressing undergraduate and medical school coursework into 6 years is even tougher. My time at UMKC’s 6 year medical program was intensely challenging, but immensely rewarding. I loved and hated my life during those years. Then there came the dreaded USMLE board exams. Studying for those exams while I had family challenges, including deaths of my grandparents (who helped raise me), was a difficult burden to bear during that time. I needed a way to decompress, and release stress and tension I was storing in my brain and muscles. Then one day, while I was working on the medical team for a combat sporting event, Coach (Brian Carroll) invited me to join his gym. Many of you who know me know that I am nonviolent person. I’m a vegetarian who loves animals and believes in the principle of Ahimsa, or nonviolence. But I decided to try it out. I quickly discovered that Coach Carroll’s gym was a place filled with discipline and solace. I found a sense of comraderie and family within his gym. He made sure I didn’t injure myself by making me practice the basics before I ever punched a bag or mitts. I was able to take out my frustrations on the bags, and what I released in the gym did not follow me home. I was able to relax and enjoy my life more despite my rigorous medical rotations.I’m now a second year psychiatry resident and I love my job. I made it through medical school. I honestly believe I wouldn’t have made it without people like him in my corner, pushing me along. His positive belief in my abilities helped me get to where I am now.I’m truly grateful for Coach Carroll and his dedication to the beautiful sport and traditional art that is Muay Thai. And if you’re someone who is thinking about joining, you know where to find him.
