i found out about starting strength in about 2017 and started the exercises by reading some of the the books and watching youtube videos. I started with just focusing on form, but limited myself to deadlift and squat and chinups for some time. I heard about starting strength opening up in san antonio a year ago and was pretty excited. I have a significant injury on my forearm and wrist and i wanted to challenge my self in building strength because i was noticing that i was gaining some rotation and additional movment just from the workouts on my own, but I hit a wall and i knew i could do more upper body but needed coaches who were willing to work with me improve my form and work through my injury. The coaches definitely know there stuff regarding body mechanics and im constantly asking questions to get to know how it all works.I finally took the leap and joined about 3 weeks ago. To me this is about getting stronger but also about regaining some range of motion in my wrist and right arm in which i have been even if its a degree or two. Truth be told its a way to make day to day activities with loved ones a lot more enjoyable, whether is playing soccer and running with my nephews to taking a hike with a friend. Im realistic of course with my injury and the possible limitations that come with it, but im excited about how this can really improve my overall day to day life and specifically range of motion in my arm. I highly recommend starting strength to anyone whether its post injury or even if its just to get stronger and improve your overall stamina and balance and just vitality for life itself.

After finding the Starting Strength method, I began my journey as a solo student eager to learn but with limited experience in proper execution of the major lifts. I tried running through a series of linear progressions, all of which met with disaster. I would typically encounter a limiting arm/elbow injury around the same level each time. I would stop and allow proper time for the injury to heal, but it would always reoccur around the same point in my linear progression.I was excited to see a proper Starting Strength gym open in San Antonio, staffed with knowledgeable coaches who might be able to help me with my situation. During my first gym visitation the coaches asked detailed questions regarding my past training history/experience and what my intended goals were regarding my future training. This was refreshing to see to say the least. They were genuinely invested in helping my break the cycle of repeated injury I found my self in time and time again. After the first few sessions my coach, Matt, suggested we focus on altering the squat grip I had been using to help ease the strain on my elbows. While squatting, I had been so focused on not reinjuring my arms I had severely let my squat technique languish. Matt was very observant and helpful pointing out the inefficiencies I had created in my squat movement. As the training weight progressed higher and higher, Matt continuously reinforced the necessary ques to help me get back on track while keeping my elbows healthy.Thankfully, since my arm pain has subsided I have made unseen progress in my other lift. Matt has been coaching me through the finer details of the overhead press, bench press and deadlift which I never would have picked up on without his guidance. The addition of these small improvements matter a great deal once the weight gets heavy enough. This is why I am so grateful to have a Starting Strength Certified Coach, such as Matt, oversee my training.Let me put it to you this way – I have made more substantial gains in 2 months time by joining this gym than I have buying protein powders, supplements and simply trying to lift by myself at home in 3 years time. The crew at San Antonio Starting Strength are not simply coaches, but they are teachers and experts in their craft!!!!

I bought the Starting Strength book years ago and used the app off and on over the years. I have wished I could train with an SSC ( Starting Strength Coach). I was thrilled when I went to PJ's coffee one Sunday and noticed that Starting Strength San Antonio was open right next door.I joined that week and have been working out there for 2 months now. I have appreciated the welcoming environment the gym offers - it's a great community! - and the patient professionalism of the coaches - I ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS LOL :)I'm 50 and my goals is to hit the 1000 pound club this year and I am confident it's going to happen at Starting Strength San Antonio!

I don't live in SA, but scheduled a 1:1 coaching session with Jordan while I was in town to learn squat, press and deadlift. This gym is a great, no nonsense facility with everything needed to properly learn the lifts. Jordan was knowledgeable, patient and very helpful in correcting my form, as well as programming tips. I recommend this gym to anyone looking to learn the major lifts.

I workout with Starting Strength Memphis and was in San Antonio for business. I had the privilege to visit the San Antonio location. I was beyond impressed with the level of of service and attention. When I arrived, Victoria had already talked with the coaches from Memphis to coordinate my session. They helped maintain the continuity of my training plan and provided excellent coaching. The coaching was clear, concise, and impactful. If you live in San Antonio and are looking for REAL results, Starting Strength San Antonio is the place to start your training journey.

I just started going to Starting Strength 2 weeks ago, but I already love it! I have not stepped foot in a gym in years so I wanted to sign up for a place that would help me get back into working out. Every one of the coaches has been super helpful and nice. I have had so many questions and everyone has been so patient with me. Someone is always there to keep an eye on you to make sure you are doing things correctly. On top of that, all the members have been really nice and friendly. The other thing I really like is they work with my schedule. My hours vary week to week and they’ve been very flexible and accommodating with my schedule. I highly recommend this place!!!

After one month in, I'm happy with my time at Starting Strength. I do the 1x/week plan and go on Saturdays, and it works well. I can workout knowing I'm being taught proper and safe form, that I will receive constructive feedback from the coaches, and that the workouts will progress as I do.I have only worked with Victoria as far as the coaches go, but her friendliness and knowledge have made it a great experience. Since classes are small, she is able to give constant advice on how to improve. I also learn about working out since I can ask her questions about what we're doing. As a 1x/week member, she gives me a plan to follow for the rest of the week until I come back to the gym.The gym itself is very clean and organized, and the environment itself is very welcoming. I'm taught how to use anything that I would need for the workout, and there's enough space and plates for me to use at each station.Overall, I'm very pleased with Starting Strength San Antonio, and I am optimistic the things I learn and gain from my time here will help supplement my other fitness goals.

Just finishing my 3rd week at Starting Strength Gym. The coaches and members have been very welcoming. It's night and day difference between this gym and and the commercial gyms. You don't have to to wait for squat racks. You have your own space to work. The greatest assets are the coaches, Victoria and Josh have been extremely helpful. Having a coach to guide and critique my lifts have been invaluable. My progression these 3 weeks have well surpassed my expectations. Would not have gotten here without the coaching. There is also an element of accountability. The other members are great. Training next to like minded people focused on similar goals creates a great community atmosphere.I highly recommend Starting Strength San Antonio.

I’ve been training at Starting Strength San Antonio for about a month now. The experience has been great so far. I have enjoyed working with a coach every workout. I really appreciate being able to have sessions early in the morning to start the day and not interfere with work and other obligations. The sunrise view is superb btw! I specifically sought out a SS gym because I had read the SS books and knew they did individualized programming and coaching. The last time I was really in a groove on my weight training I had some back injuries that I am pretty sure came from incorrect form. I also jumped on the chance to train at SS because I got pretty sick with Covid this year and it really did a number on me, but it was also a good reset for me, it was a good reminder to to get serious about my health and stop putting it off. I need to get stronger and more resilient. I’ve been really happy so far with just how much better I’m feeling already after a month of training. So far working with Victoria, the Head Coach, has been fantastic! She knows her stuff and doesn’t let me get away with poor form and is helping me retrain my stubborn habits so I don’t get injured again. Victoria is present for every exercise and gives great feedback every time. After each workout we record results in a logbook/app and then plan and adjust where needed for the next workout. It makes it nice to just just come in the morning and get right to it. I really appreciate the individualized programming and support. I feel I will progress and achieve much better results. I’m really pleased so far.As for the gym itself, it’s very clean and well organized, thanks SS for indulging my OCD self. The equipment is high quality and super solid, no cheap stuff here. It’s all custom built equipment from Texas Strength Systems, Texas Power Bars and The Strength Co, all USA manufactured. The benches are insane, super super solid, they could open up a Starting Strength Barbecue joint next door cause those benches could double as a butcher block! Ha ha I also like that they have gym leaderboards and workout plans on the displays as you walk in.
