We had our first class several weeks ago and I thought the instructor was a little abrasive, but I chalked it up to maybe this is part of the discipline aspect. He called my son out for not getting the movements right away (mind you he is 5 at the time) and my son was embarrassed. After class we asked my son if he had a good time and if he wanted to keep going, he said yes. Fast forward to the 2nd and last class and before practice he told me, Mom I don't really want to go back. What if I make a mistake and he yells at me again? I have always tried to instill once we start something we do not quit when aomething becomea hard or we are afraid. I had that talk with him and everything was ok. We get to practice and my son once again got called out and he immediately felt intimidated. This instructor even started yelling at his wife who was honestly trying to help the kids understand. This struck my nerve because I don't want my kid to think that it is ok to talk to a female like that. At one point he even told her this was her last "warning". I let the practice go on, but was really really starting to get an uneasy feeling about this guy. It gets to this one part of practice where the kids are practing jabs and punches and this guy is working one on one pretty much with my son and is constantly talking down to him. I was biting my tongue because again I am not sure if this is part of it or not. Then came the point where I had enough. The instructor called my son and the kid next to him stupid. It wasn't like a "let's not be stupid" comment it was flat out you are stupid! My son immediately broke down in tears and looked at me with that Mom save me look. I stood up and said excuse me sir that is enough. I am not going to sit here and let you call my kid or any kid stupid. I don't talk to him that way and neither are you. I told him that there is a difference in being stern and strict and then there is just flat out belittling someone. I am not going to pay you to treat my son that way and we left. Yesterday was my little man's birthday and thanks to this guy he will probably have that memory of some adult calling him stupid on his birthday. He tried to tell me well he is doing a good job. I looked at him and said well maybe encouragement would have been better. Then he made it seem like I was overreacting. Saying this is such a shame. I was absolutely speechless and I am pretty sure this guy is lucky that my husband wasn't there. Certain things push Judson over the edge, disrespecting his wife and children are at the top. I should have known better than to put my son in that situation. When my husband was a kid he also took karate by the same instructor and he also got mad at my husband and hit my husband in the face with a 3 ring binder. I tried to tell my Husband that maybe the guy has changed and won't be so rough. Unfortunately not!
