The C.W. Avery Family YMCA in Plainfield, IL, offers a variety of recreational activities for all ages, making it a favorite for families. The facility is well-maintained with modern equipment and numerous amenities such as an indoor splash pad, sauna, and steam room. Despite some exceptional offerings, including basketball programs and a variety of fitness classes, staffing issues and inconsistent policies have caused dissatisfaction among some members.
Programs like childcare during workouts and various classes for kids make this YMCA a convenient option for active families. However, members have raised concerns over inconsistent enforcement of rules and unhelpful staff at the front desk, which detracts from the overall experience.

Definitely a good place. Clean, nice equipment, good facility. Relatively low cost. Hours are somewhat limited.

Yes! The other reviewer who said their policies are all over the place is totally right! I wish I would have read it before I'd entered into even just a monthly membership with my son! The place is so inconsistent with their policies its frustrating! One day I can use water wings with him because he's under three and then he has to wear a life vest another day. The most frustrating was when I went during an "Open swim" without their day care kids but even during that hour they had all thirty or so of their day care kids in there. And they do not advise you when these kids will not only be during their designated open swim but also the regular members open swim. So even if u follow their schedule there is no guarantee their day care wont be in there. I understand there being some busy days with a lot of kids especially in the summer but they say they designate a time where regular members can swim for an hour where they're not there and you can't even get an hour. I decided to take my son in the middle part being young he doesn't llike being splashed or screamed at and one life guard had no problem. I'm in my late twenties and i'm 5'9 but because my son has a life vest on I can not bring him in the 4'-5' swim zone and have to squeeze in with their day care kids in the 4' section. What was most annoying is only one life guard had a problem with it and they couldn't even tell me themselves they had to go tell another lifeguard to do it and that poor dude clearly didn't want to or agree with it so I politely moved over but after ten minutes of just being splashed we just left. I should have followed the other members who saw the kids and just got out! The inconsistency is so annoying! Plus these lifeguards don't know how to approach toddlers. I understand I look like a young mother but i'm in my late twenties and scuba certified but I cant hold my kid in the 4ft section. my advice would be go to the park district over this. Theyre not a bunch of a kids running the show.

I would strongly suggest if you have more than one child stay away from this branch of the Y.M.C.A

Nice faciliy but policies are unclear & random. I've had 3 experiences where staff tell you something one day and the next it's not allowed or different. Was told my son could swim unattended at 8 years of age as long as I was in the facility. I get there & the front desk said no, it was 9 years old -- the swim director said 12. Was told he could lap swim with me but he couldn't. Was also told I could lap swim in an open lane while classes were going on and then told no the next week by someone else. Also, GUEST PASSES are EXPENSIVE. To have a non-member mom & child visit as your guest for the open swim they wanted $25.00!!! They gave me guess passes when I enrolled that happened to expire in June and they will give guest passes in January by raising the membership fee after 1/1/11 - but from June of 2010 to January of 2011 - you pay $25.00. I have been a member for YEARS and NEVER used a single guest pass.
