University of Montana Campus Recreation offers a comprehensive fitness experience for students with a range of equipment, classes, and amenities. Located conveniently on campus, it features a basketball court, indoor track, pool, sauna, and more. The gym caters primarily to students, making it less accommodating for parents or older users, but offers good value as part of student tuition. Personal trainers are available at reasonable prices and the facility remains clean with frequent equipment sanitization.

While the gym provides extensive options for different kinds of workouts, it often gets crowded, and weight-dropping goes unenforced despite the rules. Parking can be problematic on game days, so planning ahead is crucial.

Pros:

  • Extensive range of equipment.
  • Conveniently located on campus.
  • Personal trainers available.
  • Clean facility with good sanitization.
  • Pool, sauna, and multiple courts.
  • Great mountain views.
  • Offers fitness classes for credit.
  • Students get good value as part of tuition.
  • Rentable lockers and private showers available.
  • Good music and atmosphere.

Cons:

  • Frequently crowded.
  • Weight-dropping rules not enforced.
  • Parking issues on game days.

Very much caters to the fresh out of high school set of students, not much thought to graduate students, non-traditional, profs, etc. Very unwelcoming and unfriendly to parents. Solid as far as equipment availability, decent indoor track above the basketball courts where you’ll often find folks running the wrong direction. Obnoxious frat bros dropping extremely heavy weights on the upper level while you warm up on the lower level, seemingly shaking the entire building, despite the signs that say not to drop the weights. I’ve never noticed anyone enforcing that, though they will tell you that you can’t possibly have one parent carry your one year old while the other works out and then switch. Ditto for running on the track while carrying a baby. Dropping weights, not wiping down equipment, and other obvious violations are fine, but parents are definitely not welcome. If you go downstairs you can sometimes find a quiet place to do yoga or use the punching bag, though honestly I’d rather just do yoga at home.

Good gym, has 3 stories to it, just so crowded at times. Nice to zone out on the bicycling machines. I used to love sitting in the sauna room down in the girls locker room, but not sure if it has opened since Covid.

What I like about it is that it's a fitness gym, not a body building gym. No dropping the weights, no dudes grunting and roaring. And it's not a meat market. Just people who wanna get in shape and be left the hell alone.

Very clean gym with lots of equipment! Music is decent, and the views are nice. I enjoyed working out here this month.

Probably my least favorite gym that I've been to. The overall climate I found to be rather toxic. For people who want to flex in the mirror it's a wonderful place, for people who want to get in shape not a wonderful place.

Students who take over certain amount of credit are paying for the gym as part of their tuition. Furthermore, free first tour of the gym is offered by the staff (you need to set up appointment). Also, personal trainers can be set up for a reasonable price!

Great gym both lifting and climbing. Only issue is parking on game day. It's nearly impossible to get in on a game day and your parking pass counts for nothing. Unless you're ready to fork over some cash to get a workout better plan rest days on game days.

The atmosphere everywhere is great except when there's 30 athletes. The equipment is wonderful and everyone sprays after use.

Really great place to work out as a student, there's tons of machines to exercise any part of your body, both upstairs and down with a basketball court, track, and pool to be active in any way you choose. There's also always people who can answer any questions you have and can be personal trainers if you sign up. It's so accessible to campus and it's a wonderful venue.

If you're a student, this place is Bad.Ass. it has a great range of workout equipment, you can sign up for classes for credit that meet there, or just classes for self improvement. Instructors are nice, it has a great view of the mountains (and the parking lot), there's usually a shirt v. skins pickup game on the basketball courts, and the track has a nice view of the basketball courts. There are boxing bags, racket ball courts, a spin room, and dance/ yoga spaces in the basement. There is a sauna, towel service, rentable lockers, and private-ish showers for the locker rooms. This place us WAY better than any private gym I've ever had a membership at. I just hope it's not too expensive for me to keep going there after I graduate.
