The Richmond District YMCA is the first gym I've actually enjoyed going to. I feel completely comfortable working out here. I haven't had the chance to try out other locations, but this particular branch puts on great classes and the instructors are all very talented. I attend many of Jenny's classes (TRX, BodyPump, Cycle, Basic Core) and have often brought friends along with me and everyone loves them. Being a former athlete, I could immediately tell Jenny had been a sports coach in the past... and a great one at that. She sets the pace to motivate and push you, while still bringing a fun fiery spirit to the class. She knows her stuff and she will work alongside you every step of the way... and she's funny. I truly can't say enough great things about the woman or her classes. If you haven't joined yet, get a guest pass and try out a few classes!

There’s nothing about this Y that my family doesn’t absolutely adore. The workout experience is probably not the best you can get- it’s crowded, there aren’t tons of machines, and the free weights are lacking. Not to mention the studio downstairs is often busy. BUT! What they lack in that, they gain in experience. They are so friendly. They know my name and my kid’s name. He doesn’t go to preschool largely in part because he goes to the Y. They are so good with the kids. The classes are all great. Especially Jenny’s! We love her. Another great perk is how good they are to the community. They do community activities often. It’s clean, easy to get to, and well maintained. There is limited parking in the back but you can park at the Ross down the block and get up to two hours validated (stamp your parking ticket at the front desk.) This Y is so great!

The management stinks. This gym is pretty tiny, but they do what they can with the space, and its unfortunately one of the better Y’s in the area. They’ve gotten better about letting members know when events are happening in some of the bigger spaces, like workout rooms, but still have a long way to go with communications on closures. The biggest perk is the classes available — the class coordinator is awesome.
