My daughter was on the competitive team at Port City Gymnastics for 2 years. Initially our experience was good. We came from another gym that closed down due to covid and my daughter had to start with a recreational class at Port City. When she was invited on to team we had a few bumps in the road mostly due to some of the other girls with behavioral issues that were not easily re-directed. In my opinion you can have a wonderful athlete but if they can not behave in a group setting then the expectation is they do or they are removed from the team as a last resort. This should be discussed with the gymnast and parent long before it is ever a severe problem. Especially if it is impacting the other athletes time at practice. They do focus on building blocks at this gym and want these things perfected prior to moving on to other skills, I can see positive and negatives to this. This does not allow for very fast skill building but it can lessen athlete injuries. I prefer to let the kids get over their fears and allow them to try new skills. The professionalism of this gym is lacking. This spring they decided to have all gymnast on the team re-try out instead of evaluating for the next level. This would be fine if it was something they did every year. However the way this was done did not feel like a gym who cared about their gymnast. I am not sure what basis they ended up going off of. They did not accept many of the gymnast back on to the team and a few of the girls who were removed had just attended regionals or were invited to attend regionals. One of the girls had been with the gym for 5 years. They treated these girls very poorly prior to the re-tryouts and were only focusing on the girls who they kept on the team, as a few of the girls said to me. And this showed by who was allowed to remain on. Thankfully, my daughter had already decided she was going to leave this gym but I wanted her to stay through the end of the season because she had already committed to this gym. I do feel like anyone who is considering the team should be made aware of these things up front. We did have some good memories with the gym and girls however the changes they have made were not those of people who say they care about their gymnast. The emotional turmoil they created for some of these girls was not ok, there would be days where my daughter would come home and tell me the girls on her team were all crying or upset. I waited a few months before deciding to write a review about our experience to ensure I was not just writing out of anger for the children.I will say one of my most positive experiences with the team was this past year at the state competition the head coach called me because she was concerned about one of the events due to my daughters visual problem. We discussed this and she spoke with the judges to allow us to place brightly colored tape so she could see the equipment. I was very thankful for this because we don't like to let my daughters visual impairment limit her from doing normal things and I felt very positive in this situation.

I booked a birthday party for my 3 year old at Port City Gymnastics. I got the package that includes cake, decorations, etc. It was literally EVERYTHING I wanted and MORE out of a birthday party for a toddler. Everyone had a blast and the 2 girls that worked there were amazing. They were so helpful. My husband and I were able to focus on celebrating our son. Thank you PCG!!
