My review is regarding the gym camp (Ocean and Elemental Week). This was our 3rd ACC camp this summer. I'll not be sending my child back to gym camp with this program. If you're a family who they cater to, you shouldn't have any problem. If you're not, then please read. When you bring up your concerns, please note that your child will be the target of their close observation and they would tell you things that your child does and make him out to be a bully. On the last day of camp, Megan Williams, Program Specialist for Gymnastics at Bishop Park, told me that my child laughed at another child who was on an equipment and kicked another one while she chided my child that he didn't report that to me. There are always two sides to the story. In the first scenario, my child was laughing with another child (and not laughing at) and in the second scenario, he and the other child were pretending to kick (and neither made contact). The concerns we had were mostly about the camp counselors. All are relatively young (mostly high school aged) and they act like older kids. They simply lack the skills to manage large groups of kids. There were incidents where there were several in the first week (where there was a total of 3 boys) who were picking on my child for not doing the routines well (he has very little gymnastics experience) and because he was the only boy in his group. In the second week, there were counselors who were telling my child that he wasn't in pain when he clearly was in and one impulsively hit his head as she walked by. They also don't incorporate enough stretching (this should be a no-brainer) or even suggest ice. I'm surprised that kids who go to such a camp don't end up misbehaving as these camp counselors are definitely doing so. The program also has a program specialist who becomes very defensive when you bring up concerns.
