Gracie Jiu Jitsu Athens is set apart in comparison to other academies based on their attention to detail in developing every individual and rank.As a female white belt, I have the opportunity to learn from blue, purple and brown belts. Additionally, there are several ladies at this academy. So when I first began, I was not forced into a sea of sharks, hungry to enforce their ego by not losing to a girl. That sounds silly, but it does happen in some scenarios. No one at this academy, regardless of rank, is too lofty in their skill set to take the time to coach and develop my skills so I can be my best and equipped to defend myself in a real life situation. They are disciplined, yet kind and patient, constantly reminding me I need to hone my skills. I always leave class feeling encouraged and supported. They offer essential, intermediate and master cycle courses, which allows higher ranked individuals time to develop their individual skill set. Then, when the higher ranks attend the essential level classes, they are not pressured to practice their moves on a lower ranking individual, rather, they can support and coach the lower rank.Gracie Jiu Jitsu Athens also has a large number of upper level practitioners (purple, brown and black belts) who teach the classes. This is a huge advantage to the entire staff and students because it allows students to learn from several perspectives and add details to their tool box of skills. Thus, providing an opportunity for the academy to grow in years of experience because it has several levels rather than one advanced individual teaching all classes.Overall, I recommend this academy to anyone who is seeking an environment where they can grow in self-discipline and skill and do so in a safe, fun and clean environment.

Both my husband and daughter attend the gym and I am in complete awe of how much attention and direction they get. Even in a room full of students everyone is getting the attention they need to learn and grow in their study of material arts. It's always fun to watch the classes and I honestly couldn't imagine my family being anywhere else.Randy and the team of teachers are an absolute joy to be around. We love our dojo and I'm certain you will too!

I spent several months researching a place to start taking Jiu-jitsu lessons and ABBA was my first choice. My wife purchased the January special for me for Christmas this past year. I started training shortly there after. My only regret is that I didn't stop by and check ABBA out sooner. The classes are well structured and move at a good pace.I don't know anything about other martial arts but ABBA has student cards that guide your training and measure progress. All of the things I was unsure about have been addressed. There are standards for progression. The school is self-defense focused so it isn't all aggro guys smashing each other like an MMA school. Women and Men train together which helps show how valuable jiu-jitsu is as a form of self defense. It is a very positive environment and welcoming community.Randy and Zachary do a great job of explaining the techniques in as much detail as you want.I have had a great time and would encourage anyone to try ABBA before looking anywhere else in Athens for self-defense and Jiu-jitsu.

American Black Belt Academy and Coach Randy McElwee in my opinion are the best in the Athens, Georgia area. In the martial arts industry today anyone with any background can open a “gym” but it takes something extra to run an academy where true education for the student can occur. Coach Randy has achieved this, if you have not already take the time to look into his background, go by and talk to him. You will not regret it, what you will find is a lifetime educator, a true coach.I highly recommend him and his school.

I enrolled my 7 year old son in the Jr. Jiu-jitsu class after learning he was being bullied at school. The instructors are awesome and his confidence increases with every class. I couldn't be happier with his progress. As an added bonus, he says the classes are really fun and he looks forward to going. I also love that they incorporate exercise into the classes. That's a huge plus for a kid who prefers video games over sports. I highly recommend this school!

I started my Jiu Jitsu journey at a SAFE class. I was so impressed with the amount of information given and how it was geared for those of us that had never been in a martial arts class before. I had so much fun and the staff made it so easy to catch on quickly. I ended up signing up for the Jiu Jitsu class and have never looked back. The instructors are so well trained and make it their mission to set students up for real life self defense. The environment is respectful, playful, serious and clean. I can’t believe how far I’ve come and how much it means to me to know that I have a special skill should I ever need to defend myself. I know that this fantastic atmosphere in teaching such a specialized skill is no accident. From the owner through all the instructors, there is no mistaking their ability, passion for Jiu Jitsu and intent in sharing their knowledge in a non threatening way. I feel lucky to have such a great place right here in Athens.

Awesome place to learn self defense! I started in SAFE and got hooked into martial arts and juijitsu! Everyone is very welcoming and there are a good number of women to "roll" with if you are uncomfortable with the opposite sex. ABBA is an absolute must for every women and child!

I have been training in ABBA's jiu jitsu program for almost 3 years now and I couldn't ask for a better place to develop my physical and mental skills as a jiu jitsu practitioner. When I first started training, I was far from an athlete. In fact, jiu jitsu is really my first "sport"/martial art and the first type of physical activity or workout that I was willing and able to stick to. I credit the welcoming environment, friendly and knowledgable instructors, and high quality training at ABBA for allowing me to make this positive change in my life. From day one, I was made to feel like I could absolutely learn and grow at ABBA. Every instructor approached my training with a positive and mentoring spirit, despite the fact that I was out of shape and a bit unsure of myself at the start of my training. Now, 3 years later, ABBA is like my home away from home and my training partners and instructors are wonderful friends. I also feel stronger, safer, and more confident in my day-to-day life thanks ABBA's dedication to realistic, reliable self-defense training. However, what I am most thankful for is that I now have the opportunity to pass on my experiences and knowledge to others as an assistant instructor in our S.A.F.E. Women's Self Defense and Junior's jiu jitsu program. I would never have imagined that I could help others in this way, but training at ABBA has a way of improving your life in unexpected ways.I would recommend ABBA to anyone who has considered training in martial arts. Especially for other women who have reservations about training in a traditionally male-dominated sport, I would say that ABBA is an ideal place to begin your jiu jitsu or martial arts journey. I doubt you will find a more supportive, comprehensive, or well-structured program.

I had the pleasure of knowing Randy and his instructors before I started my personal Jiu-jitsu journey. They certainly live what the teach on and off the mats. Their program is exceptional as are the instructors who are always willing to give extra time and help. They have given me a confidence and ability I never thought possible for myself!

I have been training in Jiu Jitsu at ABBA since 2010. In the time I have been a student, I have gained a second family, self discipline, and a healthier and more fit lifestyle. Under the instruction my amazing instructors, I have grown as an individual and as a student of the ever growing art of Jiu Jitsu. I have found a love and passion for the most incredible art on the planet and am blessed to train with this awesome group of people!! Thank you ABBA for the training and fellowship.
