The Robert H. Ewalt Student Recreation Center at Texas Tech University offers a wide range of sports and fitness facilities, making it a popular spot for students and alumni. Located at 3219 Main St, Lubbock, TX, the center features amenities like a leisure pool, indoor running track, basketball courts, and various fitness areas. Open every day from early morning until midnight (except weekends), it caters to almost every sports and recreation need.

However, the center can get extremely crowded, especially during weekday mornings and late afternoons. While parking is generally available, the availability of equipment and machines sometimes falls short of demand. The center offers affordable alumni memberships, though additional fees for family members might not be worth it for everyone. Maintenance of certain areas, particularly the basketball courts, needs improvement.

Pros:

  • Wide range of sports and fitness facilities.
  • Convenient hours, open almost all day.
  • Affordable alumni memberships.
  • Indoor running track is great for all weather conditions.
  • Leisure pool is a standout feature.
  • Courts for multiple sports like basketball and volleyball.
  • Generally available parking.
  • Friendly and helpful staff.
  • Great sauna and weights area.
  • Ideal for students with inclusive tuition-based access.

Cons:

  • Extremely crowded during peak times.
  • Basketball courts need better maintenance.
  • Inconsistent information from front desk staff.

It is extremely full on weekdays. There is enough parking tho. I wish they had more machines.

I am speechless, I have never seen anything like it in the US. Perhaps the best university rec center ever. The leisure pool is one of a kind and the indoor running track is life saving in the zero humidity, dusty West Texas air.

Alumni membership is affordable. Adding my children is somewhat overpriced and not worth it. Great facilities

Great rec center for almost any non-esoteric sport (strongman, etc). Check the hours on their website, because Google can sometimes be incorrect. The parking lot will often be full around noon during school semesters, but it's not that busy (I don't think everyone who parks at that time goes in). It's only really packed around 4-6 and early morning M-F.

Im always working out here sauna is great weights are great courts are great employees are great

If you are coming here to play basketball, be careful. The courts are not maintained as they should be and are incredibly slippery and dusty causing people various injuries. Not sure how this hasn’t been addressed yet as this has been the case for years. Hopefully they can start mopping or at the very least sweeping the courts.

Unreal. Show up at 6:00 AM to swim after talking to front desk the day before and was told lap swimming available to the traveling public for a guest fee. Guy at counter was about to take my fee and let me swim. That was until “Kyler” stepped in and said no way. Power trip front desk manager gelding his muscles I guess. I understand rules are rules but when folks who answer the phones don’t know those rules, and you wake up at the crack of dawn to get a workout in only to be sent away is frustrating. There were like 20 people in total there and probably 1 or 2 in the pool alone so it’s not like they were crowded. Might want to rethink the policy for traveling public especially in lighter usage times. At least train your people when they answer the phones so people like me don’t waste our time.

It’s a lot better now that they opened the downstairs free weights to the general public. That being said, this place is almost always too crowded with not enough to go around during the school year. Other schools have 2 or more different rec centers to make up for this, but we only have the 1. Also, in the summer, they absolutely have to do something about this serious issue with flies and even mosquitos. Nothing is worse than trying to hit a PR or lift heavy and a fly is buzzing around your head or flies in your eye.As far as service, they could do a better job at updating their hours online and answering the phone. Some of the staff are better than others.

The recreation center is great at many things, and not so great at others. If you’re a student who wants to workout without paying beyond tuition, then this is the place for you.If you are a non-student or a graduate student who wants a nice gym, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. Equipment will always be packed with students and is (usually) not kept as clean as other gyms. All of their other attractions including basketball courts, pool, indoor track, are all awesome.

Recreational center is too amazing. There are so many things - football, volleyball, basketball, karate, pool, swimming zone, gym area, and many more.
