I came to this school because I wanted to learn martial arts so I could have more control in bad situations. What I learned through trianing is what I was after was more control over my life. Training with the La Tourrette's changed my entire life for the better. More confident, happy, successful, and enjoying life. If you want to learn street effective martial arts and change your life for the better, train with the La Tourrette's.

A great place to train if come with an open mind. I have only been training at this Dojo for about a month but so far it has been one of the best decisions of my life. Doctor John La Tourette and his son Master Jack are beyond knowledgeable about all the techniques they teach. They can fully back up all the teachings, fighting techniques, and lessons they teach their students. I personally think coming here is beginning to make me a better person and martial arts student. I will say the Dojo may not be for everyone but if you put in the work and come with an open mind you will learn so much. The La Tourettes and the other students are so welcoming and open to new people. I would highly recommend this place to other people who are serious about martial arts.

Doc is my instructor and I am learning so much! My self-esteem has really gotten better since starting here. This place is like my second home and the people are my family. I am so glad I decided to join!

I started with them at the beginning of 2015 and had a health concern to deal with in addition to loss of self-confidence and strength along with increased weight. In the time I have studied there, I have enjoyed an incredible decline to the health issue with improved flexibility and strength. I have stabilized and reduced some weight having started about 170 and now because no 160.The workouts can be brutal, but they are fun and the group of people accepted in addition to the instructors are top notch. The best advice going in: know the outcomes you are looking for, communicate them clearly, and evaluate them regularly. The rest - practice, participation, and perspiration, are up to you.

I was a student 20 years ago when they were in a different building. I loved the place and when I moved I felt a gap in my life. I searched for another dojo and instructors to fill the spot. Everything fell short. I moved back to Medford and on the second day I was in looking to get lessons. The instructors are like no others. Being accepted as a student here is a great honor to me. Dr. John La Tourrette is a master instructor. My sensei, mentor, and role model. It's a honor to be part of his kenpo family. The family is large. There are young and old. You will be amazed at the lessons being learned inside the dojo.

Awesome place!!! My daughter's confidence has soared! She has been able to stand up to bullies at school. She absolutely loves going. Doc and Jack are dedicated to teaching and care about the physical, emotional and mental health of their kids. The best thing I did to help my daughter was bring her here!

This place is a joke. The person who owns this place has been proven to be a fraud on various martial arts forums. I wish I had known that before I had gone here for the first three free private sessions. Well to be honest I stopped going after the first one since I'd seen this movie before. Not too long ago I was looking for a place to study jujitsu after coming home from Portland. I'd been doing BJJ and Aikido at my college and thought it'd be fun to not lose anything over the summer and work more on self defense techniques. While at the yellow submarine car wash my mother and I saw this school next door. My mother wanted me to try it out. I wasn't sure since when is tried to learn more about it online there was nothing on its website about its pedigree. After going there I quickly found out why.On the introductory day the instructor, who is not the owner, hits me repeatedly in the neck to "demonstrate" it's killing effectiveness? Well first of all the idea of a guaranteed one hit knockout is a myth. If your instructor preaches it as a self defense tactic then you need to find a new instructor. More importantly if a technique is so dangerous it can cause a "standing blackout" as he told me, why would you do it to someone who is brand new to the school? You have no idea about who they are or what their background is and that is a liability, even if you were trying to teach someone good techniques instead of complete garbage.Next off the place is filthy. I do not think that they clean it. There is an odd tension in the room, it is just a room with some curtains acting as partitions, and most of the students there seem to be constantly afraid. Even when I just tried to say hello to one of them and shake hands they looked at me as though they had no idea what to do or expect. He looked as if he wasn't sure what his instructor would tell him and was very timid. On top of this the place is a belt factory. Kids who start off at age 3 get promoted to red belt within two years. Even my mother who does not do martial arts was surprised at the speed of promotion. If a lay person is shocked by promotion speed then that is a clue about the credibility of the school. I don't know what these kids are learning but the people in charge don't care if they're still being paid. The real astounding thing is that the owner, not the instructor, tried to convince me that I was mentally disabled or intellectually slow. Really? It's not bad enough that this school is garbage and its programs are a complete joke but now they are trying to get money out of you this way as well? Now keep in mind that he said this despite the fact that I spoke better English than he did and was speaking with a deeper vocabulary. This is just too much. There is nothing worse than a snake oil salesman but this owner goes beyond that. This is the McDojo to top all McDojos. I loved how the instructor kept trying to justify the owner's comments. "He knows what he's taking about because he has a PhD. in psychiatry." I can say, without a doubt, that this was a bold faced lie. The best part is he then tried to justify the owner's credibility because he has a picture of him posing with Ed Parker and that the guy is featured in a magazine.I don't know about you but that's not much proof. Where are the other members of the industry who can vouch for him? Where are the other professionals who stand behind his statements? Who else can certify his credibility? No one. Because anyone who can stays as far away from this place as possible. What it comes down to is that as a consumer and prospective student you need to do your own research. Look at a martial arts instructor's website, if they have one, and see if you can fact check their claims. If those claims seem far off the reservation then you need to be more critical. My advice is forget this academy as it is junk. There are certainly good schools in the Medford area but this is far from it.

As a beginner, I made lots of mistakes with right postures, positioning and punches, but Jack and Doc and the rest of the staff were very patient, and movitating when needed.BEST Money I ever spent. After 4 lessons...I had a whole routine down...that just takes time to practice and master. They mix in some advanced techniques occasionally...to see how advanced you can go...to make it to the Elite...Black Belt level.Great stuff!

I will always hold my experience here at the highest regard. Simply amazing and life changing. An honor.Update from June 29, 2015:Ten years ago I lived in Grants Pass and after checking out different schools in the area I decided to drive an hour to train at Oregon MMA. The self defense and MMA taught at the school was easily the best I could find. Since that time I have moved out of the area and I have completed some training at other schools. I recently took the opportunity to take a flight out to train with Master Jack for some private lessons. My experience was easily worth the cost of the flight and private lesson. What you will learn at this school you will not find anywhere else (it was insane). Doc and Master Jack's dojo is one of a kind. If you are interested in checking out a martial art or self defense you must check out this school. It might not be the right fit for you because of the intense, realistic environment. However, when you check it out you will realize a standard through which to evaluate all other martial arts and instructors.
