Mashouf Wellness Center at San Francisco State University offers a variety of fitness and wellness activities. The facility includes modern amenities like a rock climbing wall, basketball courts, an indoor track, and a competition lap pool. The center is clean and well-maintained, with staff who are generally helpful and friendly. The center is convenient and free for SFSU students, with discounts for alumni.

However, the gym can get crowded, and some equipment shows wear and tear. The pool, sauna, and hot tub have had prolonged closures, and weight lifting areas are limited. Hours of operation changes aren’t always well-communicated, which can be frustrating for users.

Pros:

  • Modern amenities like rock climbing wall and basketball courts
  • Clean and well-maintained facility
  • Helpful and friendly staff
  • Free for SFSU students
  • Alumni discounts available
  • Variety of activities available
  • Indoor track
  • Competition lap pool
  • Convenient location

Cons:

  • Gym can get crowded
  • Some equipment shows wear and tear
  • Inconsistent communication about operating hours

Got a good workout in, always packed.

The gym looks amazing. Didn't get to see much on our campus tour, but the rock wall is impressive.

Nice building, as far as fitness equipment, pretty old and janky, weight plates almost completely stripped of rubber, machines from last century. But it is clean and has cool stuff like climbing wall and pool, gets a pretty crowded though.

Facilities are well-maintained, always a basketball court available.Only downside is sometimes parking can be hard to find

They need to sell some of these treadmills and put in some more weight lifting equipment. People can run anywhere they don't need a treadmill, people can't do bench anywhere, they need a bench. Add more benches.

It's mid at best. If cleanliness and general looks are what your worried about then this place is for you. There's a dumb platform sign up rule that only half of the people follow and basically none of the staff enforces. The equipment in the gym is decent but the weight lifting areas are small. The most egregious thing is that whenever they change their operation hours you won't know unless you follow their instagram. Totally makes sense not to have it somewhere visible by the entrance or have the employees tell the people coming in that their hours changed for that day :).Also a lot of the plates used for weight lifting are damaged in one way or another and there aren't enough plates for everyone to be frank.

Really nice facility for SFSU students and faculty, consistently busy but there's always something available if what you want to use is occupied.

I’d do 3.5 if I could. This gym’s really clean and has everything from a rock wall to a pool, but there really isn’t a whole lot for weight lifting- especially when it gets crowded. Unfortunately I’m going back to paying for a different gym now.

Faculty: before you consider paying for a membership, keep in mind that the Mashouf pools have been closed "for repairs" since April 2022 with no ETA from management for reopening. You'll be sent to the old pool in the GYM building, but access is spotty -- only open hours on weekday afternoons, but even then doors are often locked / no staff.Students: the special Mashouf pool-side events and movies advertised on the website haven't been available since the closures.Mashouf sauna and hot tub have been closed since March 2020 - not ETA for opening. No signs of any maintenance work being done in the pool area, so unclear if repairs are happening. Wish there was a timeline for reopening.

It’s a glorified planet fitness. The squat racks require a sign-in sheet with 30-minute limited sessions and the sauna isn’t available to the public. Limited equipment. Not ideal for intermediate-advanced lifters but convenient.
