Updating the review because the manager is part of the scam - they had an offer when I signed up (get your day pass credited if you sign up the same day). Have them promising multiple times to credit me, then they do a "rug pull" and start gaslighting. Zero professionalism with this gym. I've seen multiple people complaining at the front-desk about locker room theft and issues, they simply do not care ("they'll say send an e-mail then no one cares or does anything"). Sign-up at your own risk and you'll see the problems. Went from a 5-stars experience to realizing it's a 1-star gym with zero care. Their billing is incorrect. Additionally, no one cares about the showers - no soap, no shampoo, multiple broken doors. They mopped the squat area once and pretty much showed they didn't really care with a "sorry man" not really understanding you shouldn't mop and make wet a wooden platform from the squat area when the gym is open.Basics man, basics. Went from being a huge fan of this gym to writing this review and probably filing chargebacks on my credit card.

I recently joined after canceling my Equinox membership of 10 years. The gym is huge and has great equipment. There are a few corners that have been cut though. There are no full size bath towels and there are no locker room attendants. Since people can’t seem to dispose of their small work out towels (provided by John Reed) properly there are small towels all over the men’s locker room. I get the sense that the locker room is only cleaned once or twice a day. Also there are no seat cover protectors for the toilets. All in all it’s a very nice gym and has a great design. I plan on not using the locker room and showering at home.

John Reed Santa Monica is an extremely well appointed 3 story gym. The layout is awesome and the open format allows tons of space to workout and not feel cramped on space. The Gym80 equipment is by far the best equipment on the market. John Reed is a true vibe! From the artwork and unique flair, to the excellent up tempo music, it’s truly an energizing place to workout. JR is on the Santa Monica promenade very close proximity to Santa Monica pier. Some others have pointed out if you plan to shower at the gym you will need to supply your own full size towel. This location doesn’t have a sauna or steam room. Other than those small amenities this gym is nice, new and keeps up with the best out there

This is an EPIC Gym and I wish there was a location where I live in Denver!! The place is huge, with 3 floors and an outdoor area. Lots of great equipment. Lighting and mirrors are perfect and give extra motivation. Was pretty quiet and everyone was friendly when we went. The locker room was large and well-equipped with amenities. There is a nice snack bar area, though I didn't get anything there.

Not sure why there are so many 1 star reviews. Possibly due to a lack of amenities (sauna, steam room, etc)? As someone who takes fitness seriously, this gym deserves 5 stars if you don’t care about amenities ; it’s the best gym in Santa Monica. Lots of equipment, and it’s not your average commercial gym. The equipment is different from most gyms (I believe the machines are from Germany). The gym is well-maintained and very clean (workers are constantly wiping equipment, washing floors, etc).So if you don’t care about amenities, you’ll love this gym.

I was visiting LA this past week and was looking forward to working out at the gym in Santa Monica as well as the LA facility. I am a member of John Reed Fitness here in Dallas where I live, and love it. I went for a morning workout and my experience did not disappoint. I knew they did not supply bath towels (as realistically no gym does) so I took my own from my hotel, so that was no big deal. Upon entering I was greeted with a big smile by Thein (sp) I told her I was visiting, and she proceeded to say, "Welcome, come on in and enjoy your workout!". I had an awesome and invigorating workout and a truly First Class experience. The equipment and facilities were extremely clean and the showers and locker rooms pristine. I topped off my workout with a delicious protein smoothie from their juice bar! Stephanie is a very knowlegable mixologist and knows her stuff. She suggested the perfect smoothie! I would highly recommend this gym, as well as any of the John Reed Fitness Centers. I can't wait to visit their European gyms in the upcoming years when I am traveling abroad.

This gym is in the top 3 of all gyms I’ve been to. It’s clean, huge, brand new machines, and conveniently located. Why I can’t give 5 stars are for these reasons alone: no shower towels - I was offered 6 hand towels though when I needed to shower 🥲; no sauna nor steam room and SO MUCH real estate; NO seat covers for the toilet - need I say more. I don’t plan on canceling my membership over these inconveniences, but 5 stars could be granted if all could be solved (or at least 2/3).

John Reed Santa Monica- Let’s talk about it.The actual gym: The gym consists of 3 floors with a truly modern aesthetic. The “Gym80” equipment is all brand new and everything is ridiculously nice. You can tell there was a large sum of time that went in to mastering every component and corner of this complex. Even the lighting is angled specifically to represent a modern vibe alongside the interior landscaping and plants. They’re open until midnight as well which is an absolute game changer. The staff: Nate, Dillon, Vee, Joelle and Daniel are the the people I have met so far. Joining a new gym isn’t the easiest thing to do and it is critical to understand how the staff treats their guests. All 5 of these people have been outstanding in every way. “Hey welcome in” “Hey can I get you a towel” “What’s up man what are you training today?” “How was your day?” Above and beyond. With most gyms in LA you’ll be lucky if a staff member makes eye contact with you. You can tell these folks have been hand picked. The amenities: Some of the reviews talk about how there isn’t a sauna. Let’s touch on this. The membership is $130 a month, you have 3 floors of equipment, power racks, a whole wall of dumbbells, free workout classes, an outdoor section, a literal live DJ, luxurious hand soap and hand cream alongside stellar staff. You are also about a 24 second walk to Santa Monica beach and it is located downtown Santa Monica. I genuinely don’t know how they keep the price for a membership so low. $250 is probably more reasonable for something like this. So no, there is no sauna. Would it be nice? Sure but again- The gym costs $130/month. What you’re getting for that is absolutely ridiculous. Also, there is a Chipotle right next door. Also, all the cardio equipment charges your phone wirelessly. The first weekend was free which is probably where some of the sub-par reviews come from complaining about the sweaty shirtless people. After that weekend, I have met so many down to earth people. You could probably strike a conversation with 98% of the members and gain a positive interaction.Parking validation would be absolutely clutch but all parking structures surround the complex are free for the first 90 minutes then only like $2 if you surpass that/hour.If you live within a 15 mile radius amongst the semi circle of this facility, then I highly recommend it.

This gym vibe is new to me: Music at a level 9 and the bass is pumping so if you get a work call your cover is blown. No, there are no locker room amenities, but since I live so close by, it’s not a deal breaker. What’s great to see is how diverse the clientele is here. I never knew so much diversity existed on this side of town. The whole working out without a shirt thing is pretty gross. And although they offer workout towels, people are laying their sweaty backs on the benches. Which for this new gym is now the culture. The bottom floor is the main floor with free weights and plate loaded Hammer Strength style machines. The locker rooms are labeled John and Jane, so be alert! Not sure if this is out of gender neutral reasons or not.Shout out to the very friendly staff.I guess at some point in the future, water will be sold somewhere? The picture I posted is of the quiet room, where you can take a break from the night club noise for a minute.

Really want to give it 5 starsLove every John Reed gym (even the ones overseas), and this one might be my favorite yet. Layout is very open so it’s not crowded, plenty of natural light, and has all the workout equipment you need. However, it does not have a steam room, sauna, towel service for showering, or validated parking. The parking garages nearby offer 90 minutes free but it’s tough to fit a workout and shower at the gym so I usually end up paying $2.00 or $3.50 each time to park. I believe if it had these features and 2 hour parking validation it would give Equinox a run for its money. Overall it’s one of my favorite gyms and has a great social aspect to it as well! Another killer job by John Reed.
