Considering they work with low income families, disabled, marginalized populations, and are non profit, I'm surprised with how they handle their financial accounts with individuals and families. Both my son and I have had sliding scale memberships which is great, but they only accept auto draft, and then charge you hefty fines for if they try to withdraw and it doesn't go through. I get it, but I never see the charge attempt on my end, and I have overdraft so my bank will charge it usually. I did have a hold for a second when it flagged something as fraud, and I had to call in it, but none of my other auto draft accounts accrue such fees or have such issues. My son had a teen membership on a shared card, and when somethings didn't add up, we thought the other was spending it, and it was actually $25 to 75 fees from YMCA a month for about 7 months!! . We used this same card to pay for the auto draft on his musical instrument for two years and never had a problem. I asked if I could just pay it online each month or send a check to avoid the auto draft fees, and the answer is simply no. I just feel that there could be some better effort managing the accounting side of thing to avoid sliding scale families being charged double to triple the cost of their memberships if their bank is so sensitive.

I love the classes because they make me do things I would not do if left to my own devices. It's great to have the chance to make friends and also to be able to visit other Ys when traveling

What do I love about the YMCA? Smiling faces! Inclusive programming and pricing! Ever since I moved to Western North Carolina 20 years ago, I have been involved with the YMCA. As a mother of 8, the family plans were my go to, and this meant that I could bring my children to swim at the Corpening Y in Marion when they were little. Now that they are all grown up and we live in Swannanoa, we enjoy the many facilities and programs on this side of the mountain. I am truly grateful for all that the Y has to offer! - Melissa Henry
