Signed up my 6yo here here and totally fell in love. Amazing vibe, flexible (and thoughtful!) scheduling of classes, and Alex (owner) is amazing. She's super helpful and down to earth. We had tried a different martial art at another place for almost a year, and my kid just didn't "connect" with it, even though it was a good place. At Lanistae, it was right away. Then, after a few months of just watching kiddo practice, I joined myself! I absolutely love it for the exercise as well as the community.Highly recommend to those young and not-as-young-as-they-used-to-be!

My son is 9 year old and he only attended free trail for a day. After observing Alex, Olivia, Douglas, and the rest of staff's EXCELLENT attitude and patient with other kids I immediately register him as a full time student, he has been going for the past three days and he is Absolutely LOVING IT!!!!!!!!!

I can see why people leave good reviews for this place. The instructors are skillful and good. However, my experience was very disappointing. I attended the test class and was rushed to sign the membership. However, I realize that it is not something I can keep doing, so I asked to withdraw my membership the second day. But I was told I cannot get my refund. After about a month trying to contact them for refund, I finally had to go to the place again. They basically wanted me to go to the class instead of refunding me anything. It is clear that I cannot get my refund back, so I had to attend the class instead. Then, after attending one week of class, they said my membership expired and that I need to pay to continue. I paid a whole month (a little less that $300) for less than 5 classes! I would recommend people to think twice before you subscribe, cause once you do, there is no money back.

I've done BJJ at both the UFC Gym in Sunnyvale and Lanistae Academy and the program at Lanistae is far superior in terms of personal attention and quality sparring partners. As a woman doing jiu jitsu sometimes you are limited to perhaps one other woman in the class and then all male sparring partners, I have found that is not the case here and am able to have multiple rounds with different female partners, which is great, since in competition those will be the body types I will be up against. They also have a children's program (7 to 12ish, I believe) and my son (4yo) is enrolled in their Itty Bitty Jiu Jitsu class.I recently started their kickboxing program and really enjoy both their coaches, whose Muah Thai styles vary from Dutch to traditional. Between the two classes (and a little meal prep), I've managed to lose 20 pounds in six months and am currently in the best shape of my life.Their lounge space is awesome and super comfortable. Everything is really clean looking and there is no gym sock funk smell like other gyms tend to get.One warning though, white gis only on the mats.

I have been training at Lanistae for about a year and a half and am so happy I made this my academy of choice when moving to the Bay area. What brought me through the door was Milton Bastos' (head instructor) accolades, such as being a multiple time world champion, and personal referrals. Here are a few highlights:1) Full schedule of classes throughout the day for beginners, intermediate, and advanced (gi and no-gi). Milton adjusts the technique to accommodate the students in attendance.2) Beautiful facility all around: clean and open with plenty of mat space and a lounge area3) High level training partners: whether competitors or hobbyists, the talent here is top notch. Also, you will often find multiple black belts on the mats--all who bring various skills and feedback during training.4) Friendly and safe environment: Many families and children, numerous women of all levels, and people of various ages train here. If you're new to jiu-jitsu, this is a great indication of a safe and friendly place to train. Milton and the other coaches make a conscious effort to welcome people and ensure this is a safe environment to train.5) Organized and well-run: Classes start on time, and there is clear and advanced communication on holiday hours or special events. The academy is very responsive with any inquiries.6) Personalized coaching: This is very personal to me. Milton is an amazing coach--one of the best, in fact. He is always supportive and provides invaluable advice in my training and objectives. I have seen a huge change in my progression as well as how I approach training and competition. He is genuinely invested in his students and will offer his guidance as people work towards their own personal growth in jiu-jitsu. There are other coaches at Lanistae, in particular the kids' coaches. They spend a great deal of time teaching the kids as well as coaching them at various tournaments on the weekends. You will not find a better place to train in the Bay Area--guaranteed.

Best place you could ever imagine, great atmosphere and instructors for both kids and adults. We came to the Bay Area with three kids (who did not speak english at the time), here we felt at home from the start!

Awesomely friendly gym for beginners and addicts alike! Milton is a super technical and supportive coach, and makes the best bad jokes. So many super talented women and fighters of all sizes, it always feels like home :)

Milton Bastos BJJ is a wonderful place to train. Milton is kind and keeps the classes fun. While Milton's competition accolades speak for themselves, what really sets this academy apart is Milton's coaching ability. You'd be hard pressed to find someone with Milton's professional and wrestling coaching background. Personally, I don't think there's a better place to train in the Bay Area.

The awesome, action and personality-packed, kid-friendly, Silicon Valley version of Batman's training grounds - by far the best BJJ place in the Bay Area (and trust me, I checked) - lovely people.

I trained at Milton Bastos BJJ just under a year and enjoyed my time, the people, and high level instruction. Milton, his black belts, and senior students always gave great instruction and provided an academy that was fun and funny at times. If you are in the SF/Bay area check them out, you won't be disappointed.
