I stepped into this gym with absolutely zero experience in boxing a month ago and now really looking forward to my boxing class every week. Coach Anthony is very nice and professional, and you will learn real boxing skills with decent amount of work out from him. They offer one free try-out class every Saturday, and then well designed beginners friendly training program called Emerald session to build up the boxing basics if you are interested after the try-out class. Highly recommend it!!

Coach Anthony is very nice and professional. The gym is clean and neat and people in gym are all nice. Love the environment and the class settings! If you want to learn some REAL boxing, that’s the place you should go to.

Love the environment. The staff and coach are great. Even if you come in with experience, you will learn more. Very friendly people and its a great place for beginners. I've only been here a little over a month and I love it.

I have trained at 2 other boxing gyms (Nito Boxing in Hawaii and third street boxing gym in SF) and I can undoubtedly say that there is no better place to learn the fundamentals of boxing than Checkmate Boxing. It is clear that Coach Anthony cares about setting up proper technique in his students/athletes and his curriculum and class sizes reflect this. Classes are relatively small giving the coaches ample time to provide feedback to each individual boxer. Most gyms are not like this at all (they just call out numbers and walk around). Additionally, Coach Anthony makes sure there is time for mitts in each class. Nito boxing gave time for mitts but third street boxing doesn’t even have mitts in any class. The coaches will also make time to create a personal connection with you whereas other gyms couldn’t care less. If you have doubts about learning boxing or checking out checkmate, I would encourage you to take the leap and check this place out because boxing is the best form of catharsis and will definitely get you into shape. The beginner program/curriculum is extensive and Coach Anthony will get you right.

I would definitely recommend this place to my friends! Anthony is patient, supportive and humorous, and it was a great pleasure to learn the boxing skills from him. I really enjoy the classes I took and learnt a lot, even though I knew nothing about boxing at the beginning. The courses (especially Emerald) are beginner friendly, but does set up the basis for more advanced skills lying ahead.

I decided to try boxing on a whim and am so glad I did! I’ve been coming to Checkmate Boxing for just over 3 months now and cannot recommend it enough. I started off attending just once a week, but that’s grown to 3 times a week because I like it so much.It goes without saying that you’ll get an incredible workout, but my favorite part about coming here is learning proper technique (and occasionally the history behind certain moves). As someone who is always curious about the “why” behind everything I do, this absolutely hits the spot, and Coach Anthony does a terrific job of breaking everything down in a way that’s easy to understand and easy to implement. In addition to being a fantastic instructor, Coach Anthony is also a genuinely kind and patient person who cares a lot about his clients. The facility itself is spotless, well-lit, and well-decorated. I see myself coming here for a long time.

I found this gym on Google and have attended 8 classes in the last 3 weeks so far. I'm really impressed by Coach Anthony's passion for boxing and for teaching. I am a total beginner but after taking the first free class, the 5 "Emerald" intro classes brought me up to speed on the basics of handwork and maneuvering, and now I have taken several "Dark Pawn" fundamentals classes and feel like I'm learning a lot, and it's a good workout. As Coach Anthony says, you get out what you put in.The Emerald classes were up to 6 people per class and the Dark Pawn classes have been about 10 people separated into groups, but one of my favorite parts is every class you will have a several rounds of 1 on 1 time with the coach to get feedback on technique.I recently signed up for the monthly membership & look forward to continuing the fundamentals training!

Great gym and solid coaching. Each session is well structured and planned out. The facility is top notch and the class sizes are small enough where you will get individual instruction at some point during the class. Each week is a new style of boxing and new drills so you will constantly be learning something new. The coach also seems to have built a close knit community at the gym which creates a great learning environment.

A great environment and community to learn proper boxing techniques and grow as a boxer. The people here are kind and supportive of each other. Coach Anthony is an experienced boxer who loves to learn and study boxing fundamentals and techniques to ensure we do the correct way to move, slip, and punch like a boxer. The gym looks awesome and clean with lots of lights, themes, and design which makes it comfortable to go here regularly. It has heavy bags, big mirrors, a boxing ring, and much more. We have sparring sessions where we try out the things we learned with controlled power, try counters, movements, defense, and punches not with the intention to beat and knock someone out but to try, learn, and grow together.Come and give it a boxing free try by signing up for the free intro to boxing on Saturday 12:15 - 1:15pm.

Having never boxed before, I didn't know what to expect when I signed up for the free intro to boxing class less than a month ago. I am happy to say that Checkmate Boxing has far exceeded my expectations! Since then, I have been attending classes at least once weekly, completing the Emerald to Ruby package aimed at beginners and am now in the Dark Pawn classes.Coach Anthony and Coach Amy are such amazing teachers. They are very encouraging and motivating, but also give a good amount and level of feedback to help improve our techniques. Even in the free class, it is clear that Coach Anthony is a knowledgeable, passionate, and patient teacher. I would highly recommend that anyone even mildly interested sign up for the free intro to boxing class. You will learn so much and have fun!The Emerald level classes focus on teaching the foundational skills such as punches and footwork. It is great for beginners, and I really appreciated the small class size to get more personalized practice to really get the basics down. The Emerald classes definitely set us up for success in the Dark Pawn classes. Unlike some other gyms I was looking at, Checkmate Boxing really seems to care about helping every student feel confident and prepared before being in larger classes. The Dark Pawn classes are slightly larger, but are a good mix of various workout routines, footwork, mittwork, bagwork, etc. It's so much fun, even for a beginner like me! I'm pretty obsessed now and plan to go as many times a week as possible and continue learning from the amazing teachers at Checkmate Boxing. The gym itself is kept super clean and the atmosphere is fantastic. The music selection is also great, and the other folks in the classes have been so helpful and welcoming. Parking is free after 6pm on weekdays, or there is also a free parking for the first 90-minutes at the San Pedro lot, which is just a short walking distance. I've never had a problem with finding parking, and the location is very convenient.I really feel like I've learned a lot over a short period of time. Classes have been challenging but not overwhelming, which is perfect to keep me motivated to improve and to keep learning more! I would highly recommend Checkmate Boxing to anybody - you will not regret it!
