My child has been taking lessons at this school for two years, and we have been very happy with both the skills being taught and how the classes are conducted. This is NOT just an exercise class with martial arts trappings; the techniques of the style are practical and straightforward. Everything is grounded in no-nonsense Okinawan karate methods. The dojo is comfortable and well-equipped with ample space for target drills, sparring, kata, and weapons practice. Sensei Swingle strikes a nice balance between the traditional elements of serious training and also having fun, more light-hearted elements in the session (especially with the kids' classes) to keep the practice time engaging. The curriculum has plenty of work for getting better and more fit without the stereotypical "grind" of some other schools where students are subtly competing to "one-up" each other in doing more reps or displaying more toughness. Sensei Swingle maintains an atmosphere where all students and teachers are cooperating to improve their karate skills together regardless of rank. He is enthusiastic about sharing explanations for why techniques work and how students can adjust their application to make them more effective rather than just teaching in a "do as I do" manner. We are very glad to have found this ideal combination of teacher, facility, and students for training close to home!

My son has ADHD and we were looking for a karate school for awhile. Sensei Swingle here is great with children and has the most patience I have ever seen. The kids learn quickly and are taught all the moves at a good pace. When the kids start to get out of control, they call them out and appropriately discipline them as needed, holding them accountable and limit class disruption. I would not go to another karate class ever. There are several instructors and they are all Excellent.

I have trained with Mark for 10 years, and the benefits of being a student at this school still shape the way I carry myself today.
