update: May 7 : still crowded ; unless you're excited about "working in" or people tapping their foot at you; arrange your gym schedule around crowded hours ; crowded ; even after the recent improvements of late 2018. in order to work out I've had to re-arrange my workout schedule

I love the variety of classes at the Y and how the program adapts to the new trends while still keeping the oldie but goodies alive like step. The attitude of the staff across the board is friendly, accommodating, and inclusive. It's a very positive place doing good things for the community.

The Y is a good place with nice facilities but they will close for the whole day, following a 30 minute power outage in the morning. Not helpful for those of us that like to work out on a schedule. Like other businesses, they need to re-open after power outages - at least for things like the gym.

I'd like to give this Y a better review because they do have a wide variety of workout classes and plenty of workout equipment. Staff is always friendly and willing to help and it's pretty clean as far as equipment goes. But I have to give it three stars because of both the indoor and outdoor pool. The indoor pool hours for family swim are completely inconvenient and most certainly, not family friendly at all. It's to the point where we are never able to go and the pool as a family. We prefer to run and bike outside during the spring, summer and fall, utilizing the gym during only the hottest days of summer and during the winter. Because of this, the pool was the biggest reason we joined, and not being able to access it has been very frustrating. I've even traveled to other Y's that are much further away in order to get my kids in the pool. So, during the week family swim is from 1-3:15, when my children take their naps ( and, you know, when most children, universally take their naps). On the weekend the hours are from 4-7pm... smack in the middle of dinner and bedtime. These hours are not family friendly in the slightest since most people who have a family are pretty much on the same schedule. The outdoor pool is a complete joke and my husband won't even go to it during the summer months. They don't open till after noon and it's chock full of unsupervised camp kids Monday-Friday. I once counted 30 camp kids in just the small section meant for non swimmers(the red band section) The camp councilors are NEVER around the pool and are as far back in the picnic area as they can get. The section of the pool that is meant to be for children who can't swim, is over run by children horsing around and creating havoc, leaving it impossible for any parent to spend time at the pool trying to teach their child to swim. I couldn't take my children this summer because of having an infant and more than once, over zealous (unsupervised) camp kids splashed him in his face repeatedly, even after i addressed them and explained that I had a baby in my arms and they should jump in the pool further away from me, instead of right next to me. Of course they didn't listen and I didn't go again after three incidents like this. I know I'm not the only parent who feels the same way, because each time I talked to a parent at the pool, they have have the same complaints as me. I've talked to a few staff members over the past few years hoping that something might change but they all just shrug their shoulders and nod in understanding, but can't offer any sort of suggestions for change. I hope to see improvement in family swim hours after the renovation is complete, but I'm doubtful since they have been in place since long before I joined two years ago. So if you have a family, and would like to go to family swim, be prepared to sacrifice nap time and push back dinner time, neither which is worth it when you have small children.

I love this Y. They offer an array of activities for all ages. The facility is well maintained and the staff members are usually very pleasant and willing to assist.

The Brandywine YMCA has a horrible system of informing its members of hours of operation, including closures due to maintenance and holiday schedules. This information should at least be communicated on the website, and be unambiguous. When I called the number 478-9622 you only get a recording. The websites states there was no Labor Day closure, however it also says check for "possible" change of hours. Very misleading and general.
