Kobukan Martial Arts Academy

Highly recommend the evening adult karate class! Mr Ron and all the instructors are top notch, the environment is clean and safe, and it's a great place for learning. Looking forward to earning my belts!

My four year old has been in the tough pups jiu jitsu class for almost a month. He is very hyper active and has a hard time paying attention. The coaches are very patient. The more advanced students who help are alsoo the same way. They give him one on one time to try to show him how to do things. He wakes up every morning he has it and wants to leave at nine am. I always have to tell him it isn't until the evening.

Signed my 5 year old daughter up to give her an outlet and learn some structure. The school is like a family and welcomed us in with open arms! Thhe instructors are incredibly patient but firm. She has beeen going now for over 6 months and the change in her attitude is amazing. She's mlre confident, calm, and focused. This school doesnt just teach karate, but teaches the kids how to become wonderful human being. Mr. Ron is amazing!

Mr. Ron and the instructors are incredibly personable, professional, and open to all who are interested in trialing the Dojo. Our family has quickly found our own places in the Dojo and are excited to become more disciplined and grow athletically in our own classes. They offer military discount, and are veteran and military friendly, the Dojo is a military veteran. I couldn't recommend this Dojo more!

I went in to find a place where my kids could take lessons, and enjoyed the environment so much that I started taking classes myself. Mr. Ron and all the coaches give a real family feel, if you're looking for a place, I recommend giving it a shot!

The instructors are the greatest in the area the owner truly helps you to feel welcome and creates an atmosphere that is above any school in the area in regards to quality and helping you to learn. The philosophy that is big there is "There is no bad student, only bad teachers" and they live it. Always there to take to the time to help one learn. The training area is Spacious, clean, Padded floor for safe training. Conveniently located in the OceanView East beach area not far from Joint Base Little Creek and down the road from my resident. Guest observation/waiting area.

Mr Ron and all the staff are very focused on each individual student. I feel I can also talk to them about my daughter's behavior outside the mats and they reinforce honesty, respect, discipline, and accountability for one's own behavior. I am grateful to have found Kobukan.

Our vote for Best in Hampton Roads! Mr. Ron and his staff are amazing. Incredible improvement in my child's self esteem and physical fitness, not to mention behavior! But, this is not merely a school for kids, as an adult student I would recommend trying a class and seeing if BJJ, kickboxing, or as my path has gone, Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu karate might be a perfect fit. Self defense with a great workout, and honorable tradition.Tai chi as well!!

Our son has been attending Kobukan for just over a year, and even in the middle of a pandemic, the dojo has managed to be the very best. It is not your everyday gym. This is a family owned, one of a kind establishment with a firm foundation that teaches fundamentals for children to carry on with them. The folks here start out as friendly strangers but become family. Thank you Ron and Katie for putting so much heart into something you love to do, you are making such a difference for these kids!! The children's class is an exceptional program. The instructors all know each other well and make sure the kids learn about respecting others and discipline, in addition to having fun in class. Kids are motivated to learn as well. It's refreshing to see military veterans teach kids not only from the local community but also from military families as well. Kobukan is also an ideal continuing school to enroll military children who have been taking martial arts while parents were stationed in Japan. One of the few Japanese martial arts school available in Virginia.
