A great place to learn and grow. Every single class has multiple instructors on the mat who you can ask questions at any time. The coaches have extensive competition and cross-training experience; they are true martial artists that understand the underlying body mechanics and mental discipline necessary to succeed. The kids and adults teams are amazing and supportive, so much fun to be a part of. Thank you Invictus!!!

I am visiting in the Albuquerque area this week and contacted Invictus BJJ about dropping in to train with them. Professor Richard Mitchell was quick to respond via email and invite me to join any classes I wished to participate in, free of drop-in charge. I arrived for a Monday night class. This was the first time I ever trained outside my own affiliate dojo. You never know what you are walking into when you step into another BJJ dojo. First the facility was clean with a large mat for rolling. The class was well attended with over 20 people. There was an array of belts and even people just a few classes into their BJJ journey. I introduced myself to the professor and everyone on the mat. Everyone was very welcoming and the general vibe was what I am accustomed to at my home training facility. The technique training of the class was good and the coaches were great at correcting our techniques. I stayed to spar a round and everyone was very respectful of each other. Invictus is a BJJ dojo I won't hesitate to visit again and if I was to train long term in Albuquerque I would be looking to make it my training home. Thank you Professor Mitchell. OSS!

Both instructors were great, but Rick worked with me and another student one-on-one and I enjoyed his instruction. I felt very comfortable attempting new moves and the flow/pace was perfect for me. There's just a very inclusive and friendly vibe, with the right amount of challenge.

The instructors seemed very knowledgeable but the space came across as cold and unwelcoming. I showed up half an hour early to make sure I could talk to someone and be sure to be respectful of the norms and culture of the gym but despite asking a couple of people no one clarified or talked to me until minutes before class. There was no introduction and despite working with someone who was clearly having issues the head instructor only approached once and asked how I was doing. (He didn't offer any correction or improvement, and I probably looked like a spider on a hotplate with a foreign technique and entry.) He never helped my partner who, even I could feel, needed some guidance. Coming from a relatively sizable background in martial arts this was a pretty hostile environment and the lack of instruction seemed startling to me. I constantly found myself saying "if I were teaching this, if it were my gym, etc" which is never a position I want to be in while visiting a gym to learn and experience something new for myself. As I sit in my driveway and reflect on what I learned today, all I can say is that "invictus practitioners have very inventive uses of the gi, and the practitioners were very skilled at some specific tactics and grappling, but that I don't think I walked away with anything for myself today." I hope I was a unique situation but it still soured the location for me as a martial artist.

Rick is one of the best BJJ coaches you will find in anywhere. He runs a great gym and the Muay Thai program is fantastic as well. The welcoming and positive atmosphere makes any new/first time student feel instantly at home.

I do not have enough room to describe how grateful I am for Invictus BJJ. These guys have been incredibly hospitable and have done a tremendous job creating an atmosphere/culture that anyone would want to be a part of. Equally important: the training and instruction are excellent.I spent a week in town for work and reached out to them before I came down. They welcomed me into the academy and insisted on no drop-in fees for me because I was a visitor. ZERO. No one treated me any differently than regular members despite being a visitor. The instructors took time to answer my questions and even helped me catch up on the things I wasn’t around for the week prior. Everyone in the gym was approachable, regardless of belt-color, achievements, etc. Rick, presumably one of the owners, even invited another visitor and I out for the gym’s regular weekly social hour after training one evening. The instruction and class structure are great. They say drillers make killers. We had plenty of time to drill the techniques we worked on during class. The professor was present and available for questions/clarification. I especially appreciated the common thread that ran through the training each night of the week. There is clearly some sort of common curriculum. This is different from some gyms I’ve trained at where classes may be put together haphazardly without rhyme or reason. Everything I had the opportunity to train on at Invictus was complimentary. There was plenty of time to free roll after drilling as well. This is a great place for all levels, including new white belts like me.
