I tried coming in with the 3-day trial pass several times, but kept getting denied. First it was because guests need to be registered before 10pm -- no problem. Then, I tried coming in the next day and was told I wouldn't be able to because it is short staffed, and most recently, the front desk refers me to the Hilltop 24 Hour Fitness as apparently the El Cerrito location doesn't allow guests due to covid... very confusing. Guess I'll be sticking with City Sports.

When this El Cerrito branch opened 5 or so years ago, it was spic and span new and in great shape. I moved here from the downtown Berkeley branch, which had become quite decrepit and had finally closed permanently. This one merited 5 stars.Shortly after opening, they discontinued the towel service. 4½ stars. Then, gradually things went downhill. Soon most of the lockers filled up with permanent users – strictly prohibited – so that finding a vacant locker became difficult. 4 stars. Then the effects of “deferred maintenance” began to show up. Rubber grips on the weight machines wore out and fell off (natural wear and tear), but still none have been replaced. Barbells of various sizes started to disappear. Broken machines (torn or ripped cables, wobbly pulleys) used to be fixed within a couple of days; now it often takes 2 weeks. Equipment is supposed to be wiped down after each use, but towel racks and disinfectant dispensers are often empty. 3 stars.Showers always used to work. But the “hot” water is barely warm, the coolest “hot” water I have ever seen at any gym. Now normally 2 out of 8 showers are broken, and stay that way for 1-2 weeks. Soap dispensers are often empty (there are 2 per stall, so both should never be empty). Shower door handles are broken, and not fixed. The swimsuit spin drier has been out of service for several weeks, not even marked as out of service. 2 stars. The pool is great. But the jacuzzi was out of service for weeks. By choosing the time carefully (TuTh 6 PM), one could often count on a lane to oneself, since there were normally only 1-4 swimmers for 3 lanes at pool slack times. But for the last 3 weeks, 1-2 lanes have been filled with unaccompanied children or youngsters playing, but not swimming, leaving only one lane for lap swimming, shared by up to 4 swimmers. This is supposed to be an exercise gym, not a playground. 1 star.A lot of these problems could be solved by staff attention. I often see 4 people sitting in uniform around the front desk, doing absolutely nothing. Clearly 1 person is needed, maybe 2. But 4? Couldn’t they check on equipment and supply problems? They don’t even write down problems and complaints reported by users.Since these are the same problems that plagued the Berkeley gym before it closed, they are not unique or specific to one facility. They appear to reflect a company policy to ignore basic maintenance and just run their facilities slowly into the ground. Or maybe the same incompetent manager moved from Berkeley to El Cerrito. Either way, without attention from the highest executive levels the problems will remain.Until then, I recommend that you find another gym.

Haven't been back since pre-pandemic. This location has definitely become more crowded from when they converted this gym from a "super sport" to a "sport"club, as a result from the bankruptcy. I used the stairmaster and noticed dried sweat stains on the top cover of the machine, same with the elliptical. I wish they would hire more cleaning staff as people still don't have common courtesy to wipe down the machines.

There is something seriously wrong with this place. Do management, corporate and patrons not see whats going on?!!!!Half of the spray bottles are broken. Weapons are scattered everywhere. I do mean EVERYWHERE!!! Meaning across the gym on the other side. Restroom is unbelievably filthy. Machines are filthy. Some needs to be replaced.WORST OF ALL the locker room has now been extended onto the main floor. Meaning theres people working out and walking around shirtless and dripping with sweat!!!!!OSHA needs to be contacted and corporate headquarter needs to reevaluate every aspect of this place from its condition all the way up to management.Amazed its still operating. Just waiting for someone to get hurt or get virally sick.My review is afters months of observation. Was waiting for improvement but it just keeps getting worst.People treat this place like their personally bathroom and gym. I still see people shaving. People walking in to the locker shirtless. YES walking into locker room from the main floor shirtless and dripping of sweat. I’m not talking about taking off a shirt at entrance of locker room but actually walking through across the gym.PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

I’ve worked out at over thirty 24 Hour Fitness gyms over the last twenty years, and this one is consistently the most filthy gym I’ve ever been to been to in my life.Just before writing this review, I had to stand in a half inch of urine while trying to use the bathroom. During that experience, I noticed several pieces of gum in the urinal that were there five days ago. It’s safe to assume that every person that used the men’s room today stepped on the urine, then treaded it all throughout the gym. This is a typical experience at this location. What’s baffling is that this is the same bathroom the employees use.Aside from that, the weights are seldom where they belong, paper towels and cleaning spray are regularly or off stock, the place is in general disarray.

I love this gym. It’s conveniently close to my work, the staff are friendly, it has a heated pool, sauna, steam room and of course the other equipment. I like that I have so many choices so if I don’t feel like working out on a machine I can swim instead. There are days when my joints are a little sore so the swimming allows me to get still get a workout without impacting my joints. My only complaint is that the locker room should be cleaned more often. The showers are a heavy trafficked area and there is hair everywhere and the floors in the locker area are often dirty. I suggest they clean them more often, just because it seems like a lot of people come and go. At least the restrooms have been kept up which is nice.

This is one of the best gyms I have been to. There are tons of free weights and machines for people to use. It can be quite crowded at times, but that is expected. Overall, I have met some really nice people and had awesome workouts. The staff are also very nice and helpful when you need something.I have seen other reviews complain about cleanliness or gym etiquette but I have not had an issue in either area. The gym is relatively clean, most people wipe down their machines (though sometimes the bottles are defective/are empty but they have plenty of others). Similarly, I have never had a problem with gym etiquette; most people are respectful of your space. And I have been to other gyms with truly abysmal gym etiquette (i.e., people just taking weights from you, skipping you while waiting for a machine, or saying rude comments).

Cancelled my membership about two months after I got it. Such a filthy gym. I understand being 24 hours and typical wear and tear by customers. However, I rarely have seen any employees cleaning but chit chatting with each other or on their phones. Half the time there are cleaning spray bottles empty that doesn’t allow people to wipe down equipment after themselves. I do not think the bases of the treadmills or any machines have been wiped down since the gym opened. Mold growing in the water fountain. You would not catch me touching the floor to do a push up, I would be scared to get an infection. The employees aren’t welcoming and rarely say hi or bye.
