“Absolute”ly love seeing the progression our son has made in just the few months he’s been coming to Absolute. With the sweat dripping down he’ll still have a smile after he’s complimented on a move he did well.

If you're starting to shop around for a Martial Arts gym to enroll your kid in, I've done the legwork for you. I shopped around for a solid year while waiting for the opportunity in my personal schedule to get my son started. When it was time, I headed straight back to Absolute.1. I feel the instructors at absolute have the same balanced approach to the kids as the parents should have, meaning they are expected to listen when they're being taught, but at the same time there's a light atmosphere and the kids are having a great time. I visited a couple of gyms that seemed a little out of control and the structure wasn't as conducive to learning.2. Respect for your opponent is highly emphasized here, which was another thing very important to me.3. The instructors will encourage your kid to be a good, compassionate human....helping those kids who might have some initial challenges upon starting to train. They readily express their compliments to the parents when they observe something positive.4. On the adult side, I recently began participating at Absolute myself. I went in knowing nothing about Jiu-Jitsu other than what I learned from watching my son's 8-12 year old classes. I'm impressed with the willingness of the more advanced members to teach what they know and give pointers. Many times they'll even offer to stay after class to go over something.5. There are several classes during the week in which parents and kids can participate together. I've found this helpful for my own development as well and my son's.I know this is a long review, but hopefully I've just saved you from driving around place to place. I'm 100% convinced this is the best Martial Arts gym for my son's development into a respectful and formidable athlete, as well as a good man.Update, 10/30/2020:After promotion day a few days ago, my son got in the car and self-committed to learning 1 new move per week in addition to what is being focused on during the classes, and drew up his own plan. If you're in a place that inspires kids to commit to becoming better all on their own, you're in the right place. Absolute MMA is the right place.

Please bear with me as I write a wall of text to describe why I think you should train here with us at Absolute MMA. I've trained here for 15+ years. You're going to be hard pressed to find a better gym to learn Jiu Jitsu in the United States, let alone Utah. Rob Handley is very capable and adapts very well to each and every learning style that walks through the door. There is a lot of confusion these days around what Jiu Jitsu is - it's difficult to define. What I can tell you that it is based on fundamentally sound self defense and functional, effective, real-world fighting. Lately there have been many spin-offs of certain styles that are a lot of fun to practice within their own self-contained rule sets - many instructors claim this to be "new, improved jiu jitsu." Which is fine, if they don't forget the basis of what jiu jitsu is at its core and ensure their students understand that what they're learning is just a small part of the whole and likely not usable in a self-defense situation or a real fight. Jiu Jitsu is constantly growing and evolving, it's important to stay flexible in that regard. But the core of fundamentally sound self defense and functional, effective real-world fighting needs to stay intact. Without that you're just playing a game based on jiu jitsu. Rob keeps all of this in mind with his curriculum - he teaches jiu jitsu as it's meant to be. He stays true to what Jiu Jitsu is at its core while being flexible and accepting of new styles as they conform to that core. He is a master at applying these concepts in jiu jitsu for self defense, jiu jitsu for sport and jiu jitsu for fighting (MMA). He's not only a black belt with decades of experience in jiu jitsu and many other martial arts - but he's a world champion in jiu jitsu and a national champion in many of the other arts he practices. He loves sharing his experience with anyone willing to put in the effort to learn. Kids get an excellent foundation in self defense. Adults get what they want out of classes, whether it's exercise, conditioning, learning self defense, building strength, confidence, self esteem, or just learning how to kick butt! Positivity is part of the culture, not just talked about. The students here have a high level of respect for one another and help each other learn. New students are accepted with open arms and welcomed into the "Absolute Family". For real, it's a home away from home for me. I can only speak for myself, but I'm sure there are many others at Absolute that feel the same way. 5 stars all the way (six if it was possible).
