I've been working out at Orange Theory Birmingham for almost a year and have only good things to say about this studio: staff are knowledgeable and friendly, classes are plentiful, web/iphone interface for scheduling is easy, facility/equipment is clean and well maintained and, best of all, the workout is very effective/results oriented. I've done a lot of different workout classes--pilates, spinning, yoga, et cetera. OTF's mix of weights and cardio got me into the best shape of my life. If you're willing to do the work, this is the place.

If you are looking for a gym to join to "chill"... This is not for you. I was first hesitant to join this gym despite my wife's insistent. I have been an athlete as far back as I can remember. So joining a new gym in a plaza did not appeal to me. I finally agreed to give it a try and that is all you need. You get hooked. It is hard core... One hour of heart pounding, muscle aching push. My high tech wicking shirt tends to be completely soaked by the end. The feeling at the end is so gratifying. The weight lost result tends to be very rapid as after a month I am wearing pants that have not fit me in 5 years. The front staff are superb (Troy and "D"). And the trainers are beyond qualified and engaging. (Kathy, Sara and Jen... ) The 815pm crew are absolute gems. Music is great and after more than 40 sessions, I am yet to repeat a day's routine twice.Don't take my word for it.. Make an appointment and try it.... one time.

The class is a mix of strength and cardio, using the treadmill, indoor rower, weights, and TRX. The routine changes in with each class, but is easy to follow with the instructor walking through each step and with the TV screens reminding you of the sets. The whole time, you are wearing a heart monitor and your performance (heart rate, caloric burn, and minutes in orange/red intensity which is 84%+ of max heart rate) is displayed on screen for you to monitor. The goal is to have at least 12 minutes in the orange/red zone to achieve the EPOC effect (after-burn).I'm not super into working out and I lose interest easily, but I'm competitive. So for me, this is a fun class. The heart rate monitor lets me compete against myself and the rest of the class, and I like that each class is different. The instructors are attentive, the staff is friendly, and the facilities are clean. This location is in a strip mall so there's free parking which is great for Birmingham. The only negatives are that bathrooms/showers are limited which in inconvenient since everyone needs it right before or after class. Also classes tend to get full unless you go in the middle of the day, so you need to book in advance. I signed up for a class package so it's not a big deal, but something to consider if you're getting one of the monthly memberships.

Class keeps you moving and the hour goes by quickly! I like that you're constantly doing different things. Wearing the heart monitor during class and being able to view your progress in real time is great motivation to continue to work hard throughout the class.
