24 Hour Fitness in Indio, CA, is a large gym that offers a variety of workout equipment, classes, and amenities. The facility includes a sauna, steam room, and swimming pool, which many members find beneficial for varied workout routines. Despite its name, the gym does not operate 24 hours a day, which has led to significant customer dissatisfaction. The gym is noted for its cleanliness, friendly staff, and well-maintained equipment, making it a popular choice among its members.
However, issues with broken equipment, fluctuating operational hours, and a sometimes cumbersome check-in process have detracted from the experience. Additionally, the gym can get crowded during peak hours, and the air conditioning system has been unreliable, particularly in the humid or rainy seasons. Customer service at times has been reported as unhelpful, especially concerning operational hour adjustments and maintenance needs.

It has a sauna and a variety of equipment allowing for wide variety of workouts. So the facility itself is good. But there's one thing that comes as close to a deal-breaker as possible. The check-in process at this location forces you to either: A) train yourself to bring in a government photo ID, show it to whoever happens to be the clerk, and thereby having to trust whoever happens to be the clerk to not do anything unsavory with your personal information on that ID (date of birth, ID number, home address...etc.);or B) train yourself to bring in a digital device with internet connection to scan a constantly changing QR code with no feedback from the check-in scanner. Meaning that there's no way for you to know whether your check-in scan was accepted or denied, and you'd have to TRUST whoever happens to be the clerk with whatever they say. So if you think your QR code scan went through and you walk past the scanners, but whoever happens to be the clerk doesn't thinks the scan was successful, they'll call you back, force you to stop, make you pay attention to them, change the direction of your movement, return to the check-in counter, refresh your QR code again, scan it again, then wait for the approval of whoever happens to be the clerk to go about your day. What if you don't wish to carry a government photo ID or a connected digital device into your workout session? What if you wanted a smooth, seamless check-in process because whoever happens to be the clerk may not be your cousin or bff and you don't want to be forced to trust them? This is an excellent example of how the supply side in any commercial transaction, 24 Hour Fitness in this case, can and will get a leg up on their client-base by outsourcing their business operational costs to the client, and coerce the client to do the work for which 24 Hour Fitness ought to be responsible. Our attention as individuals is extremely valuable, and this check-in process invasively trains us to redesign our habits to benefit the organization at our expense. If you ever wonder how the organizations/institutions we build to make things easier for us end up stressing & harming us -- this is one example. If you patronize this club, or any business or office that deploys similar parasitic tactics, I invite you to respectfully speak out & push back against this institutional parasitism.
