New York Sports Club (NYSC) on 76th Street is a large gym facility spread across four floors, offering extensive cardio and weightlifting options. The location is convenient for residents and workers on the Upper East Side. The gym's friendly staff, particularly Denise, and comprehensive class offerings including pilates and HIIT, make it appealing to many. Unfortunately, its operational issues, such as maintenance delays and cleanliness concerns, have led to mixed reviews among members.

Despite the presence of various updated equipment and affordable membership plans, members have raised significant concerns about broken machines, limited towel availability, and unplanned closures. Customer service has been inconsistent, with some staff praised for their helpfulness while others are described as rude. These drawbacks have resulted in a divided customer experience that potential members should consider.

Pros:

  • Convenient UES location.
  • Friendly and helpful staff.
  • Four floors of equipment.
  • Variety of classes.
  • Clean locker rooms and sauna.
  • Affordable membership plans.
  • Updated treadmills and rowing machines.
  • Never too crowded in the mornings.
  • Good deals for hospital staff nearby.

Cons:

  • Frequent equipment breakdowns.
  • Limited towel availability.
  • Inconsistent customer service.

I really like this gym. It is simple and has space and loads of machines and is good value for money. The Receptionist is always very friendly on weekday mornings which is really appreciated!Only thing that I didn’t really like are the classes.

Better now with the new (to us) equipment. Some equipment choices r curious. Not enough recumbent bikes. They need to replace the ligh bulbs on 4th floor. Soon, we will be working out in darkness.

So much of the equipment here is broken, they've either run out of signs or just don't care that its broken. After three months of using the gym, I haven't seen any of the equipment repaired. Bolts have fallen out of the rowing machine while using it and after reporting it, they've left it as-is. Yesterday after setting up my e-spinning bike, I found the cadence sensor was broken so switched to the next bike to find it makes an ear piercing noise at speed. I stopped after annoyed looks from other gym goers and moved to resistance equipment instead, only to find the cup holder taped on it falling off. The clincher was the seat falling off the military press machine as I prepared to do a set. My workout ended early right there. The promised refurbishment can't come soon enough, but in the meantime, there is no sign of maintenance.Update: I contacted the owner per their request three weeks ago but have yet to hear anything back.Update 2: NYSC has since replaced all the treadmills and rowing machines which is nice. However, other broken equipment is everywhere across the gym. The latest being that many of the weight selector pins and carabiners for attaching to cable machines have gone missing, mean much of the equipment while not technically broken is useless. This makes for a frustrating work out. I raised this with the general manager and she said that some members bring their own!Yesterday I went to the spin class, but the regular trainer was out and there was a sub listed. However, the sub never turned up after 30 minutes of waiting.Update 3: I inquired about canceling my membership. It's less than a year since I joined a one year membership. When I asked the person at front desk would there be any fees, he said no. This seemed very odd, but I went ahead and cancelled it there and then. Later that evening, I got a call from someone else at NYSC informing me that I will now need to pay $100 to cancel my membership early.I went back to NYSC and spoke with the manager about the issue and why I wanted to cancel my membership. She listened to all my concerns and offered me a free month then I can cancel it if I still wish to. She also reaffirmed that this location is next to be refurbished once the team finish up the 91st street location.Since I spoke with her, I have seen some improvements: there were several techs there fixing various equipment, spin instructor started logging faulty bikes, carabiners for cable machines have been installed. Just hope more improvements come soon.Update 4: the seat fell off the hip abductor machine this week while I was using it. One bolt was missing and the other was ridiculously loose. I notified front desk who said they would look into it but haven't bothered just yet and left it as-is for the next unfortunate person. Still no update on the long promised refurbishment either. Hopefully January they say, although that's what they said 18 months ago. Not very confident it will happen any time soon.Update 5: after a two year pandemic hiatus, I rejoined. It's the closest gym to where I live but also the most comprehensive. Prior to the pandemic, they replaced all the treadmills which are still in good condition.Since the pandemic, they were bought out and received some decent investment. Prior to rejoining, I did a trial session and only found 5 items out of order, one of which was a faucet which has since been repaired. The sales rep told me they were going to refurbish soon but given that is what the previous sales rep told me 4 years ago, I was sceptical. However, 2 days later while working out I saw the renovation team assessing the space! The next week, all the resistance machines on the 2nd floor were replaced! Plans are in place to renovate the 4th floor on Monday where the free weights and other resistance machines reside. There is talk of a new spin studio. All in all, I am remarkably impressed by the changes so far and think I will be sticking with this location.

Weight room has been under constant renovation since start of the year. They have now closed down the weight room for the past week with very little warning. Was supposed to reopen this Saturday, but now closed through Tuesday (again no forewarning). Incredibly frustrating to have gym routine completely disrupted with no refund.

Before COVID the machines weren’t top of the line, but they were good enough combined with the weights. Now after coming significantly down after the pandemic peaks in 2022, things are more spaced out and there are less machines, and the hours are limited -> limited workouts

Nice gym! The price wasn't over the top and relatively good deal for New York City. They have pretty much all the equipment you need. Free weights, Smith machine, Dumbells, barbells, Cardio, a studio, trainers, and much more. They also have showers with soap and shampoo with plenty of lockers and towels.

The actual facilities are ok - choice of equipment is there but a bit worn. Totally fine as a strength training gym though.Customer service however is poor, or at least inconsistent. I signed up for a promotion while I was finalizing a move to NYC and only went once on the first day, and was told I could cancel by the 1st and not be charged. My move got postponed, and when I called on the 1st, the representative told me that although I missed the cutoff by a day (perhaps I misheard), he would cancel my membership without fee and let me get a trial again when I was ready to come back.A week later, I received an email from corporate saying my account was past due and also charged a ~$50 fee. When I called in this location to ask for a refund, a different person on the phone wouldn’t budge and said going by the contract I’m obligated to pay it, completely disregarding what I was told a week ago.EDIT: I reached out to the e-mail per the reply here but they only credited me half and didn’t refund me for the $50 fee that was already charged.

If you're into just getting a good workout this place will satisfy you, I'm more into powerlifting they have benches, a platform for deadlifts, and two squat racks. You can't ask for everything but this place is a gem in nyc.Update: They took out some good machines like Hammer Strength and others. Now they brought in Matrix equipment its not the same unfortunately.

4/25 - new equipment is nice, but the weight lifting floor is still dwarfed by 3 floors of cardio equipment, and there has been an uptick in membership making it harder to get a workout in before 830a12/7/2021 @7a (1hr after opening) Equipment is sparse and never restacked and cable machines have been missing labels and remain unattended to. Its a lackluster in all capacities

Just added new equipment and its magnificent. The staff (specially Carmen, and the rest of the morning crew) are amazing! Truly A++ service.Always clean, never too packed (again, I go in the Morning) and the machines/weights are brand new so it feels like a whole new gym.Spacious! 2 DEADLIFTING PLATFORMS IN A COMMERCIAL GYM?! What?!!My only suggestion is i wish that it was open at 5am or open a tad bit later. Still 5/5
