New York Sports Club (NYSC) on 76th Street is a large gym facility spread across four floors, offering extensive cardio and weightlifting options. The location is convenient for residents and workers on the Upper East Side. The gym's friendly staff, particularly Denise, and comprehensive class offerings including pilates and HIIT, make it appealing to many. Unfortunately, its operational issues, such as maintenance delays and cleanliness concerns, have led to mixed reviews among members.

Despite the presence of various updated equipment and affordable membership plans, members have raised significant concerns about broken machines, limited towel availability, and unplanned closures. Customer service has been inconsistent, with some staff praised for their helpfulness while others are described as rude. These drawbacks have resulted in a divided customer experience that potential members should consider.

Pros:

  • Convenient UES location.
  • Friendly and helpful staff.
  • Four floors of equipment.
  • Variety of classes.
  • Clean locker rooms and sauna.
  • Affordable membership plans.
  • Updated treadmills and rowing machines.
  • Never too crowded in the mornings.
  • Good deals for hospital staff nearby.

Cons:

  • Frequent equipment breakdowns.
  • Limited towel availability.
  • Inconsistent customer service.

Terrible condition but in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king. Equinox on second ave and New York racquet club on york don’t seem to be much better based on reviews so I go here as it is right across the street. 50-75% of the cardio equipment is out of order on the first floor on any given day - takes forever to repair (they claim they need to order and wait for parts). Then you have the clientele who leave weights lying all over the place on the 4th floor. Nothing and I mean nothing is returned to the racks and sometimes it takes me five minutes to locate the set of dumbbells I am looking for. Some members actually leave their used towels on the last machine they use - disgusting, who are these people. I have complained numerous times about the broken equipment and all I get is a smile and a shrug. Don’t use locker room facilities as I live so close so can’t comment on that.Don’t agree with all the comments about club being filthy, staff is constantly cleaning and in the year I have been a member I have never seen a water bug or roach as some have commented, the problem is old equipment that is not maintained and members who are slobs.

Possibly the WORST gym ever. The ONLY reason I am still a member is out of pure convenience, I have a busy schedule and this club is a block from my house. I’ve been to gyms in many states and countries and this is by far and away, the worst. Dirty, machines have people’s sweat all over them, members rarely wipe them down after use. Dust literally drops from the ceiling as I’m on the cardio machine. Machines are ALWAYS broken. The cable machine on the second floor has been out of service for like 4 months. Owners/managers take little care of any of this or the members needs. Front desk is rude, never friendly, only one younger guy and one of the trainers (very friendly) actually greet you when you enter without an attitude. Trainers are nice I’ll give it that- worked with Kevin for years and he’s amazing. Possibly the only upside. Other than that- no. There are never any clean towels. The lady at the front (if she even decides to give you the time of day) directs you in the bin to fish them out for yourself. That’s great customer service! Management staff (which is ever-changing understandably so, because 1- who would want to work here? It’s obviously a miserable place judging by their attitudes, 2- nothing ever seems to be done to make this place better) doesn’t seem to care. I waited outside the office for 10 mins while one of the managers ignored me, then instead of saying “hey what can I help you with?” He just muttered he’d be back and walked away. So I wait and he doesn’t return. So I go over to a machine (clearly still In his view) thinking when he gets a free minute he would come over and maybe ask what my issue was, but NOPE, walks right by me. Couldn’t care less. One of the female managers is always outside a few doors down smoking cigarettes and there is never anyone available to address concerns. Also, have to love their broken clocks- I hate coming around closing time, I usually try to make it mid-day, but on the day or so a week when I come around closing, staff is always rude. One girl screams at everyone at 8:48 (they close at 9) “GET OUT! We’re closed! What don’t you people get!” Now I get it, there are those people who linger and try to take advantage and push the clock. That’s annoying and rude and I have worked in the service industry, so I get it, believe me. But lady, why are you shouting at me as if all of us have stayed after closing time? Actually, why are you YELLING at your members at all? Have some class. There is a way to speak to people, and that is not it! This has probably happened over a dozen times that I have witnessed. I have even heard members say to staff “I’ll be done in 5 minutes, it’s only 8:45” and one lady in particular gave a big attitude and told him that they were closed. That is not how you treat people. If you’re looking for a gym Equinox or Crunch are close by, this gym is not worth it. Also- free weights are constantly all over the place on the 4th floor, there is a disgusting stench up there which I have never in my life seen as bad as this gym, and when you do see a cleaning person (very few and far between) they will “clean” and jab at your machine WHILE you’re on it! Some lady starts jabbing her mop into the stair master when I was on it, doing a good speed, and the thing shut down. I almost had a heart attack! And tripped. She’s done this multiple times. I really wonder how this place is even in business. Oh- and they constantly play games with membership fees- my membership went up without any notice. And the fees were hardly worth this dump before, never mind now.

Would rate zero stars. This gym is UNSAFE.Equipment is broken and not marked accordingly. Repairs take MONTHS to complete, if at all.The air conditioning has not worked properly for years. It is often so humid as a result of inadequate cooling (humans exercising and sweating generate high heat loads) that the air can become difficult to breathe.Yet somehow parent company TSI continues to show growth and profitability. Simply unacceptable. If you can go anywhere else you should.

Regarding membership: As a walk-in at this location the receptionist introduced me to Ryan. He gave me a tour of the facility and guided me on a thorough walk through at each floor. We ended at his office and I signed up for a 1 year membership! He offered me a plan that suited my budget and maximized my options. I referred a friend and he provided her an equally quality experience/customer service. Ask for Ryan!

NEVER SIGN UP FOR NYSCThey had a promo online for $1 to join the membership with two month free. After nowing that my new apt has a gym, I called to cancel my membership. By then, I had to pay an annual fee of $70 and they had to have 45days of notice to cancel, hence need to pay $200. I did not even go to the gym once and there were no reimbursements. It’s like just taking away your money. THIS PLACE SUCKS.

Just went up this month which defeats the 10 dollar bonus they took off for doing business with my company. Machines are always breaking down which is annoying. Convenient but sucks. I’d rather travel further for better service which is why I ended my membership. Charge so much but sucks as well as some of their workers

Not a bad gym but not good either. It’s one of those gyms that is just falling apart and nobody is going to do anything to improve it... like many other NYSCs. I don’t use cardio equipment, so my review is mainly for the weights. The good: 3 bench presses, 2 squat racks and a deadlifting platform with bumper plates. Nice new barbells that aren’t bent and falling apart. Decent selection of machines and enough benches for dumbbells. 2.5 lbs weights available. Lots of towels. The bad: Old machines and benches that are falling apart, useless machines taking up space. Weight room gets extremely crowded during busy hours. Mildew and mold that haven’t been addressed for a while.Overall it’s not a bad gym. It’d be nice if there were more benches and squat racks given how busy it gets. My last gym was a Blink that opened a couple years ago but it had everything this gym had except the equipment was new, had more squat racks, was cleaner and was less busy. All for 1/5th of the monthly price and no extra fees. But otherwise it’s a typical gym for NYC.

Not very clean - equipments are dusty. The soft cushion flooring makes it hard to get a good balance with heavy weights when you are standing. For the price they charge, this needs to have a much better/tidy setup. Used to go to Blink and I prefer their environment.

One of the worst NYSCs in the city.I don't use cardio equipment very often so I can't speak on the first and third floors all too much. However, I am serious about free weights and this place just dissapoints.Pros:- 3 flat benches and 2 incline- 8 or so benches for free weights- barbells are on the newer side and not bent- deadlift platformCons:- Large amount of equipment is broken- Majority of equipment is so close to one another it's near impossible to use the equipment- Not much room to stretch- Weights are everywhere (both plates and DBs)- Place overall is filthy. I don't care too much about sweat everywhere (it's a gym after all) but this place needs a deep clean. There's mold, dust, old carpeting, bland walls everywhere- For what little space is on the 4th floor (where free weights are) the equipment selection and organization could and should be MUCH better.- The squat racks are the worst. I physically can't use them because the notches are at awkward heights for me. Either it's too high where it's unsafe to unrack or it's too low that i've actually injured myself multiple times.I do hope this place gets renovated because it could be great, but until then I cannot wait to leave.

I wish I could give this place negative stars. If you are looking for a gym, please check other gyms and avoid this place. I joined this gym because it was just a few blocks away from my apartment. After almost 2 years of my experience with this place, I can confidently say that this is the worst gym I've ever joined. Many work out machines were old and broken. Broken machines were never fixed while I was going to this gym. There was dust everywhere and many times they did not have clean towels ready. The worst things are their customer service and cancellation policy. I had to cancel the membership due to an emergency move. I went to the gym to cancel my membership in person right before I moved out of the city. The front desk person said that only the manager could cancel memberships, but the manager was not there. I had to email the manager to cancel my membership. No explanation, I was just charged cancellation fee. I emailed the manager again asking about the cancellation fee, but I could not get an answer from her until 5 days later. I didn't mind paying the cancellation fee. However they also charged me for a 1 month full monthly payment (30 days) and a partial prorated payment (15 days), even though I was NOT even able to attend the gym.So if you join this gym and ever want to cancel your membership, you will have to plan your cancellation like months ahead. If you have to cancel your membership because of your emergency situation, even if you are not able to go to the gym at all, you will be charged for a cancellation fee, PLUS almost 2 months of monthly payment for NOTHING. They are total thieves. There are many other good gyms in UES. You will easily find a better gym with the money you will pay for this gym. Double check with their horrible policy and get yourself a better gym with usable equipment, clean environment, communicative and friendly staffs and better policy.
